Description

No. 830,577. I 'IPATENTED sEPT.11, 190e. W. P. DEVINE;
JEWELRY B0X.
APPLICATION FILED MAB.. 9, 1904.
W@ ffl/a@ UNITED STATES InLiTENTV oEEIoE.
WILLIAM P. DEVINE, or BOSTON',
` HALETo WILTON MSSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- E. D RAKE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS..
JEWELRY-Box. y
To all whom b may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM?. DEVINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suiiolk and State of -Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the followinr to be a full, clear, and exact'description'of5 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makevand use the same.
to an imience of illustration.
The jewelry-boxconsists of a box proper i and a'cover which are made in substantially against the inwardlyfol side cover 3.
`place.'
similar manner with the variation necessary to adalpt the one member for use as a box and the ot er member for use as a cover or 11d.
The box proper is indicated in a general- Way by the reference 'character l.v The main portion of the box' is a metal shell'or frame 2, W ich.A is cup-shaped, as' shown, and
rovided ith a 'flat bottom. .This shell'or ame 2 is provided with a cover 3, of plush, cloth, leather, or other suitable lmaterial stretched upon and over the exterior surface of the frame 2, having its edge `4. turned or folded over the edge of the frame or shell 2.;
The inside cover or linin 5 has its edge laid ded edge of the out- A fastener 6 is employed Vto hold both theinside and outside covers in A hefastener ts the shell or frame,
and since it is similar in peripheral outline to the eripheral outline similar in shape to the shell or frame., The
fastener holds the respective covers by ressof shel -or frame with which itcoperates it may, for the sake of brevity, be said to be ing and nippl'n their'edges against t e inside of the s Specication of Letters Patent. y Application filed March 9. 1904. Serial No. 197,242.
Adevice' o 'holding cable, itwill be observed, 'to the portion of the.'
1 el or frame. l It should be ob-- served, perhaps, that the invention' is not necessarily limited to a construction in which the fastener presser and ni s the edges of the covers against the inside ofp the shell or frame, as it contemplates constructions in which the edges of the covers are pressed and nipped against the .outside of the shell Aor frame. It should further be observed that the inside cover 5 covers and rconceals the fastening device by the fastening device. This `is an im ortant feature of the invention, and so ar as I am aware I am the first to conceal a fas# tening device 'by the covering which it secures. The inside cover 5 is in the illustrated embodiment of the invention provided withv a depression to receive a ring or other article of jewelry, vand suitable stuffing or 'Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
being extended over packing material 7 is provided to support the cover 5 in'proper position. The fastenin device 6 in' the illustrated embodiment o the invention consists of a metal ring and is smallerthan the inside of the shell 2, but
suiiciently largeto press and hold thetwo edges ofthe outside and inside covers a ainst the inside of said sli/ell, and thereby hedd securely in position. vThe fastening device 6 projects upward beyond the edge of the shellprovide a portion which is adaptedl 2 so as to to be engaged by a corresponding portion of the lid or cover.
The lid or cover (indicated in a general way by the reference character 8) is similar in construction to the box proper, 1, except that the stuffing or packing material 7 is omitted and the fastening-ring is -located a slight distance above the edge ofthe shell, so'
cover or lid may' emthat the shell of the brace the rojecting portion of the fastening iP the box proper. The outside and inside coversare heldin place in the same manner as in the box proper. The method of securing the inside cover by its edge between the fastening device andthe frame, which fastening device is concealed bythe inside cover, is also applian outside cover in place. 4In the claims, therefore, lthe word cover unless otherwise the securing of ICO limited is to'be understood as applicable to either an inside or an outside cover.
The present Invention is not limited in its use to jewelry-boxes, as it is susceptible of use wherever it is desired to provide a box or article with. si cover; and the claims ere not, therefore, to be construed as limitin the invention to use in jewfelry-boiresf-as t e=same may be employedin many dlferent 'connections.
` What is claimed isi- 1. A jewelry-box member consisting-of a shell or frame, a cover for one side thereof and a fastening device for the cover similar in shape to the frame, the icover being extended over one of the surfaces ofthe shell or frame and overthe fastening' device and havving its-edge nipped and heldbetweenthe fassubstantially as y festeningd'eviceand between the fastening device andI the' shell orfrmnle and being and 'the fasteningdevice, --scr'fibed nippedfand vheld between thefshell: or irame i,
substantially as de- 2 5 3. Afjewelry-box member lconsisting of a shell or frame) a cover, a lining and a, fasteningdevice similer `in shape to the Shel or frame, and located'inside thereof, the cover 3o extending" over the outside of the shell or' frame over'its edge and between the fastenin'gdevicel 'and fthe shell or frame and the lining extending over the inside of `the shell or frame .and over the fastening devicel and be- 35 tween thefasteningidevice andthe shell or lfreine;v the faSteningdevi'ce-acting to nip the edges of the cover andliningendhold them in'plece, substantiilly as' described.
