Application filed August 24. 1993: Serial No. 276,676.
of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in hermetically-sealed cans and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in theclaim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar-view oi the same, showing the manner in which the cover or closure of the can is re moved. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
through the can. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device for removing the contents of the can, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the key used for removing the cover or closure of the can.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a can or similar container of any desired form and construction, but which is shown as oi cylindrical form and of tin or other sheet'metal. -The can 1 has its top or cover 2 provided with a surrounding rimflange 2, said cover being hermetically sealed thereon by soldering the annular rim or flange 3 of said cover, as shown at 4:, said flange being constructed flaring, as shown at l, to form a continuous channel between it and I e body. of the can to receive thesolder. To permit the cover to be readily removed, its rim or flange 3 is scored or groovedin its outer face at two points 5 6. These grooves or scores extend entirely around the rim 3 and are preferably in parallel relation, as shown. At a suitable point in the rim is formed an angularlv or diagonally disposed cut or slit 7, which forms a tapered tongue 8, which is adapted to be engaged by the open ing-key 9. (Shown in Fig. 5.) The cut or slit 7 extends from the edge of the rim 3 to a point adiacent to the upper roove or score 5, and from the inner end of t 1e cut or slit to said groove or score 5 is formed a short groove or score 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The ton ue 8 is prrierably bent outwardly to a slight er'itent, so that it may be readily engaged by the key 9 and so that the solder or the latter is removed from the can.
other sealing material ll may be poured he 'neath it to effectively seal the cover or clo sure. The opening-key 9 (shown in Fig.6) may be of any form and construction; but 1 preferably make it of a piece of h wire or metal rod by bending one of its ends right angles to form a cranlr or linger-piece ii and a bending its opposite end upon. itseli to-iorm a slit or opening 12 to receive the tongue 53. In opening the can, as shown in tongue is inserted in the slit l2, and the key 9 is rotated to wind the "flaring rim 4, the
In order to permit the contents of the can to be readily taken out after. its cover has been removed, I provide a follower 15, which is in the form of a disk of slightly less diame ter than that of the can 1. This disk is adapted to lie upon the bottom of the can, and projecting upwardly through the latter from the center of said disk is a rod 16, which has at its upper end an eye or loop 17 which forms a finger-piece The rod 16 is approXimately as long as the depth of the can, so that the loop or eye 17 lies directly beneath the cover 2 in position to be readily grasped when The lower end of the rod 16 may be secured to the disk or follower 15 in any desired manner; but i preferably pass the same through a con-- trally-disposed aperture in said disk or follower and bend said end at right angles and solder it to the bottom of the disk, as shown at 18. It will be seen that after the cover is removed from the can the contents of the latter may be readily removed by pulling upwardly upon the rod 16. In practice I pref erably -fill the can through its bottom, which latter is soldered on after the disk or follower 15 has been placed in its position in the can,
From the foregoing description, taken in 2, the
rec
connection with the accompanying draw-l ings, vthe COllSlZIUCtlUIl, operation, and advanl tagesof-the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. l Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificingany of the advantages of 1 this invent-ion. i '5 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a canbody, a cover 4 therefor having a wide depending flange soldered to the body, a reni'ovable strip located l in the flange and bounded by two parallel score-lines, a flaring rim on the lower edge of the flange and below the lower score-line, whereby a channel is formed between the can-body and the lower edge of the flange so as to facilitate soldering, an oblique slit in the lower edge of the flange and a score in alinement with such slit and extending from the upper end of said slit to the upper parallel score-line thus forming a starting-tongue which is adapted to be engaged with a key for the removal of the strip.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 30 nesses.
JOSEPH TENNEL RYAN.
