To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY M. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inventedanew and useful Firing Device for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in firearms; and its objects are, first, to reduce the chance of accidental discharge of a firearm; second, to provide a lock mechanism which will avoid the trouble caused by the sticking of a firing-pin where it is desired to avoid such trouble; third, to provide a firing mechanism which may be adjusted to compensate for the wear of parts or for other purposes, and, fourth, to accomplish all the above purposes by means of a device which will have the maximum efficiency for a given spring-power. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the mechanism with so much of the firearm as will suffice to show the connection of the invention therewith. Figs. 3, 5, 6, and 7 are front and side views of the different parts making up the invention itself. Fig. 4 is the back and side view of the same part represented by Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Fig. 1- shows the trigger A in its normal position. The trigger A differs from an ordinary trigger in being made with a cam Z1 Z3. This cam operates a second cam C, which in turn operates a movable nose E. In Fig. 1 the point 9 of the nose E revolving about pivotf is pulled into the face of the hammer as far as the device will allow.
Fig. 2 shows the trigger A pulled to operate the firing device. The hammer, as shown by solid lines, is in its position when at full cock, and as shown by dotted lines is in its position at the moment of striking the cartridge. The hammer and the trigger are operated in the usual way and with the usual springs. In cocking the hammer it moves on pivot (Z, cam (J also moving on pivot (Z and being kept in the same position relative to the movable nose E by cam k'lt'. On the pulling of the trigger A the cam moves the cam G into the position shown in Fig. 2, and at the same time the hammer is released and descends to the position shown by dotted lines, while meanwhile the movable nose E is first forced about the pivot f by the cam G into the position relative to the body of the hammer shown by dotted lines, where it is stopped and firmly held by the cam C and the stop 8, and then moves as part of the hammer solely around pivot cZ. As a result the nose 9 of the hammer strikes the cartridge with a force represented by the square of the velocity multiplied by the combined mass of the hammer and its movable After the firearm is discharged the trigger is released and is pulled by the usual spring into the position shown in Fig. 1. The cam k k, which is a part of the trigger, moves the cam C from the position shown in Fig. 2 into the, position shown in Fig. 1, and the cam C in thus being changed in position moves the nose E back into the position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be noted that the cartridge can only be exploded when the trigger is pulled into the position shown in Fig. 2.
I am aware that prior to my invention firearms have been made with safety devices to prevent accidental discharge; but my invention differs from these in that I use a composite hammer and obtain the effect of a solid moving hammer striking the cartridge.
I claim as my invention 1. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a trigger and a cam adapted to operate asecond cam, a second cam adapted to operate a movable hammernose, a hammer with a movable nose and a stop 'adapted to stop the movable nose in any desired position in relation to the body of the hammer, all substantially as set forth.
2. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up oftwo plates, one plate movable around a pivot on the other and so placed in relation to the other that its face is movable in and out of the face of the other so that when the body of the hammer is down and at rest the striking part of the movable plate is movable independently of the body of the hammer toward and away from the cartridge-cap, a trigger, and means to move the said movable plate by moving the trigger, combinedand operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In firearms, and in combination With the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up of two plates, the plate transmitting the blow to the cartridge being movable around a pivot on the other and so placed in relation to the other that the striking part of the movable plate when the body of the hammer is IIO down and at rest is movable independentlyof the body of the hammer along a path substantially the same as the path taken by the striking part of the hammer when in its downward blow it explodes the cartridge-cap, a trigger, and means to move the said movable plate independently of the movement of the body of the hammer by moving the trigger, combined and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up of two plates, the plate transmitting the blow to the cartridge being movable around a pivot on the other and so placed in relation to the other that the striking part of the movable plate when the body of the hammer is down and at rest is movable independently of the body of the hammer along a path substantially the same as the path taken by the striking part of the hammer when in its downward blow it explodes the cartridge-cap, and means to move the movable plate as desired.
5. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up of two plates, the plate transmitting the blow to the cartridge being movable on the other and so placed in relation to the other that the striking part of the movable plate when the body of the hammer is down and at rest is movable independently of the body of the hammer along a path substantially the same as the path taken by the striking part of the hammer when in its downward blow it explodes the cartridge-cap, a trigger, and means to move the said movable plate independently of the movement of the body of the hammer by moving the trigger, combined and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up of two plates, the plate transmitting the blow to the cartridge being movable on the other and so placed in relation to the other that the striking part of the movable plate when the body of the hammer is down and at rest is movable independently of the body of the hammer along a path substantially the same as the path taken by the striking part of the hammer when in its downward blow it explodes the cartridge-cap, and means to move the movable plate as desired.
7. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a hammer made up of two plates, one plate movable around a pivot on the other and so placed in relation to the other that its face is movable in and out of the face of the other so that when the body of the hammer is down and at rest the striking part of the movable plate is movable independently of the body of the hammer toward and away from the cartridge-cap, and means to move the movable plate asdesired.
8. In firearms, and in combination with the cooperative lock mechanism, a trigger or means to operate a cam, a cam adapted to move a movable hammer-nose, a movable hammer-nose with a striking part Whose path of motion in relation to the body of the hammer is along a line varying slightly from a line vertical to the front face of the hammerbody, and a hammer-body, combined and operating substantially. as and for the purposes set forth.
