FASTENING FOR KNOCKDOWN FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,255, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed September 21,1904- Serial No. 225,316.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FITZALLAN B. \VILLIAMS, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Knockdown Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to means for attaching or securing together the separable parts of articles of knockdown furniture, and the improvement comprises companion parts having meeting surfaces with attaching devices, and bearing-surfaces adapted to fit upon and be secured to the parts of such articles.
The object of the improvement is to provide a device of this character which will be conveniently and generally applicable for connecting separable parts of tables, desks, folding bedsteads, partitions, boxes, cases, or any parts ordinarily connected with screws, nails, glue-blocks, corner-irons, mortises, and the like, which are assembled to form the complete article and which it may be desirable to separate occasionally for shipment, storage, or other purposes. I have attained this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing two sepa rable parts of such an article in fragment connected by a fastening device containing my invention and shownin edge view. Fig. 2 is a view of the same parts, but shows one member of the article and of the fastening device in plan view as seen when looking at Fig. 1 in an upward direction. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a detail showing an end or edge view of the detached male part of the device. Fig. 5 is a detail showing a bottom view of the detached female part. Fig. 6 is a detail showing a bottom view of a detached locking-piece, and Fig. 7 is a detail showing an end view of the said locking-piece.
In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 designate connected parts of the article of furniture. The male part 3 is secured by screws at to the part 2 with its bearing-surface upon the same, and the female part 5 is secured with its bearing-surface resting upon the part 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Flush with the edge 6 of part 3 is a projection 7, which has a flat side extended in the same plane with said edge. From said flat side a pin 8 extends, said flat side and edge 6 forming the meeting surface of said part 3 and being the head of the pin. Said pin has a notch or groove 9, Fig. 3, in the face side thereof near the end.
The hearing-surface of part 5 is seen in Fig. 5. It has a flat portion along its rear part adapted to lit snugly upon the part 1 and a raised or recessed portion 10 at center projecting in front. It has a perforation 11 adapted to receive the pin 8 of part 3, the perforation at the rear coming near the rear edge, or in some instances cutting through the edge, as seen in the illustration. The top side of part 5 around said perforation is made flat to [it against the edge and flat side of projection '7 and constitutes the meeting surface of said part 5. A rotatable locking-piece 12 is adapted to fit under the raised or recessed edge 10 and be secured there by a screw 13, which passes through perforations l-I and 15 and enters the part 1. Said locking-piece has an inclined or thread-like flange or cam 16, which traverses the perforation 11 and is provided with a recess 17. Preferably a perforated lever or handle 18 is provided for rotating said locking-piece and securing it in any desired position by means of a nail 01' screw set through its perforation into the part 1. The outer end of the lever being tapped with a hammer may be forced round until the cam will jam up so tight as to stay in place without any nail or screw, and the nail or screw may be applied against the side of a lever not perforated to hold it from turning the same as if in the perforation. WVhen the recess 17 is turned forward to coincide with the perforation 11, the pin 8 can be entered into said perforation, so that the meeting surface of part 3 will impinge upon the meeting surface of part 5, and by now turning said lockingpiece back the thread-like flange or cam will enter the groove 9 of said pin and bear increasingly upon the bearing-point 19, Fig. 3, at the inner side of said groove as it is turned back, tending to draw said pin farther into said perforation and causing the meeting surface of part 3 to bear so hard upon the meeting surface of part 5 as to bind said parts rigidly together and to hold the attached parts 1 and 2 as firmly together as if dovetailed or secured with screws or nails, corner-irons, or glue-blocks.
The invention in this case consists, generally, of a pair of companion parts, each provided with screwholes, a bearing-surface adapted to fit upon one of the parts of the article to be connected, and a meeting surface adapted to fit upon the opposite companion part for holding the pair firmly in the desired relative position to one another, and a part having a revoluble cam, one of said companion parts having a perforation or recess traversed by the revoluble cam, which is adapted to be set in a fixed position, and the other of said parts having a pin or extension adapted to enter said perforation and provided with a.
lug serving as a bearing-surface for the cam to draw the pin into the perforation and hold it there for binding said companion parts firmly together upon their meeting surfaces, substantially as described.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of companion parts and a part. having a revoluble cam, each of the companion parts having a bearing-surface and a meeting surface and screw-holes, one of said parts having a perforation and the other an attaching-pin adapted to enter the perforation and provided with a lug, and the cam being adapted to traverse said perforation and bear upon the lug, as specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising a plate 3 provided with screw-holes, a meetingsurface 6, 7, and a grooved pin 8 extended from said meeting surface, a plate 5 provided with screw-holes, a meeting surface, a recess 10 and perforation 11, and a, rotatable locking-piece 12 provided with a recessed, threadlike cam 16 and lever 18, as specified.
