Be it known that I, KENELM JOHN WINsLoW, ot' Montpelier Row, Twickcn'ham,-in;the county of Middlei sex, civil engineer, England, have invented an Improved' Method of Communicating Rotary Motion to Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andeiiact description thereot`,which will enable others skilled in the art to makea and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part/of this specification, in which i Figure 1 isa)4 front view.

My invention of an improved method of communicating rotatory motion to axles is applicable to vari ousmachines, carriages, and more especially to'sewing-machines, which are worked either by steam, pedal, or
other power.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown various figures of my improved mechanism as applicable to a sewing-maehine.
In carrying out the invention, Itwo exible connecting-rods, bands, or chains, are'made `to act upon two hollow drums, inside each of which are suspended oneor more pawls. Each pawl works on acogged, roughened, or ratchet-wheel, ixed on the axle, within the drum, and is lrept in position to work by means of a link, attached by a pin to the end of the -pawl, the other nd of such link being'fastened to airing or pulley, working loose upon the axle'vor bearings of the drum. Friction is applied to this ring or pulley bymeans of a' weight or spring, so as slightly to retard its free movement. The drums have ythe same centre of motion as the 'axle to be turned. When the drum is moved backwards, the link, acting from the ,ring or pulley before mentioned, on to the pawl, lifts it just free of the ratchet, and keeps it so until the movement is reversed, when it instantly causes it to take or gear into the teeth of the ratchet. y I
By this apparatus, also, the noise which would otherwise beoccasioned by the pawl when trailing on the ratchet is obviated. A cord or band from a pulley placed beside and attached. to one of the drums, is passed over pnlleys,placed in s'ome convenient part of the machine, to a similar pulley attached to the other drum.
The lower portions of the rods, chains, or bands, are fastened respectively to foot-levers or pedals. The machine being put in motion, alternate'action is given to the pawls, which, working on the cogged or roughened wheels, impart continuous rotationto the axle.
A' is the axle.` B B are cogged or ratchet-wheels, fixed on the axle'. These cogged wheels are enclosediii'v hollow drums C C', which work loose on `the axle, or in separate bearings. `Ineaeh of the drums ,is suspende'd` 'a pawl, D, which is arranged so as to take into the indentations or teeth of 'the coggcd wheel, as shown in iig'.

E is a link, attachedeat one end to the pin F, at the -end of the pawl 14), the other end of'such link being attached to a similar pin, G, which is fixed to the metal ring or pulley H, and which pin G Works through a slot in theside of the drum C. The ring or pulley H surrounds the axle, and works on a bearing at `the sidel of the drum, its free4 movement being slightly vretarded by any convenient means, such, for instance, as by the friction-ring K, which is pressed on its outer rim hy means of the spring L. When the drum is moved backwards, the link E, being pressed against the friction-ring H, lifts the pa-wl just free of the ratchet, sliilil cient play being given-to the pin G, in the slot before mentioned, to admitof this., The pawl D is kept free' ofthe ratchet-wheel B untilithe movement is reversed, when thev ring K andlink E,acting as a drag, willtcauseV it instantly to take into the teeth and work upon the ratchet. It will thus be seen that all noise ot' the pawl trailing on the ratchet is obviated, and its action on the ratchet made instant and etectve. v
M M are two treadles, to which are attached bands NN'. Thesebands are passed around, and are fastened to the drum C C. 'The drums are connected by means of the band O, which is passed around and secured to the pulley P, attached to the side of thedrum C; thence it is passed over the pulley P attached to the side of the drum C. -Motion beingl given to the treadles, an alternate forward motion is given to the drums C and C', and thus the axle A will be made to revolve in one directionby the means previously described.
Instead of the two drums `operated by two treadles, and connected by the cord O over the pulley'Q, my
improved apparatus may be made to operate nearly if not equally as well, with one drum and treadle,..and with an India-rubber or other spring, connected to the side-ot' the drum, at one end, and to any other suitable iixed connection at the other, for retracting the said drum.
' Having thus descrb'edmy invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-IL ,1. The combination of the loose hollow drums C, hinged pawls D, link-connections E E Gffrietiompulley H, fixed ratchet-wheel B, and shaft A, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein lshown and described.
