PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH E. BOX, OF MORRILLTON, ARKANSAS.
liRONING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,177, dated May 16, 1905. Application filed Octobe 27, 1903. Serial No. 178,725.
T0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, SARAH E. Box, a citizen of the United States, residingat Morrillton, in the county of Conway, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined stepladder and ironing-table, and has for one of its objects to provide a household article or device of a folding character and otherwise well adapted for the dual purpose for which drawings, the reference character 1 designates the two side pieces of the ladder, having the steps or rounds 2 secured therebetween in any known manner, the numeral 3 indicating the ironing board or table, which is pivotally secured at one of its ends to the corresponding end of the ladder by hinges 4:, as shown.
Pivoted intermediate the length of the board and side pieces are oppositely-disposed braces 5 and 6 of any suitable material, each of which is pivoted to one of the side members by a pivot-pin or other connection 7 while their free ends are provided with a hook or other means 8 for engagement with the screw-eyes or other means 9, secured, preferably, to the a folding of the device is permitted, The
ends to the member 10 and pivotally secured.
at their opposite ends to the side members 1 by means of pivot or other form of pins 13..
Other braces 1 1 and 15'are pivotallyconnect ed, as at 16, to the side members 1, the braces 14 and 15 each comprising members 19 and 20,
having a knuckle or other form of joint18,
the braces 14: and 15 thus being collapsible, but serving to support the braces 11 and 12 firmlywhen the member 10 is employed as a foot-piece, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The braces at both sides of the board are of the same construction. It will thus be seen that when the device is employed as an ironing-table the braces are unfolded, the member 10 being thrown down to form a foot-piece, placing the board 3 in a horizontal position for use as a table, as shown in Fig. 20f the drawings. When used as a ladder, only the braces 5 and 6 are secured as aforesaid, the other braces remaining folded and in substantially the same plane as the side members 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, whereby the member 10 may be moved upward to lie transversely of the hinged ends of the board and ladder to'serve as a bucketrest or shelf for the reception of tools, &c.
" While I have described and illustrated one form of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but that I am entitled to changes in form, proportion, material, and minor details without departing from the spiritof my invention.
I claim- I 1. A device of the class described comprising side pieces having connecting-steps therebetween, a table hinged at one end to the side pieces, brace-rods pivotally connected to said side pieces and detachably secured to the table, and arms having a shelf secured to their ends pivoted to the side pieces for movement to lie at times parallel therewith to bring the shelf above the hinged ends of the side pieces and table, and at times at an angle thereto to bring the upper face of the shelf into position to engage a floor to form a foot-piece for the support of the table.
2. A device of the class described comprisingside pieces, a table hinged to the side pieces at one end thereof, brace-rods pivotally connected to said side pieces and detachably secured to the table, and arms having a shelf secured to their ends for movement at times to bring the shelf above the hinged ends of the side pieces and table, and at times to bring the upper face of the shelf into engagement with the floor for cooperation with the side pieces and brace-rods to support the table in a horizontal position.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a ladder comprising side pieces having connecting-steps therebetween, of a table hinged at one end to the side pieces, the side edges of said table being provided with screw-eyes, brace-rods pivotally connected to the side pieces, said brace-rods having hooks secured at their free ends for engagel'ncnt with the screw-eyes, arms, a shelf secured between the ends of the arms, said arms being pivoted to the side pieces for movement to bring the shelf at times into position above the hinged ends of the table and side pieces, and at times to lie with its upper face in position to engage a floor for cooperation with the side pieces and brace-rods to support the table in its horizontal position.
In testimony whereof I aflix m y signature in presence of two witnesses.
