Description
No. 799,217. PATENTED SEPT. 12, 1905 W. N. BEE.
WRENCH. 1
APPLICATION FILED FEB. B. 1905.
aria INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed February 8, 1905. Serial No. 244,730.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM N. Burma citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \(Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that class of wrenches wherein one of the jaws is adjustably mounted on the shank, one of the objects of said invention being to provide a wrench that can be quickly and easily adjusted to fit nuts of different sizes.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, as well as the structural features by means of which said objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the entire wrench, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the lever.
l designates the shank, upon which is slidably mounted the frame 2, in which is pivoted the lever 3, actuated by the spring 4, said lever having a vertical h1g5 formed integral therewith or rigidly mounted thereon, said lug passing through the aperture 6 in the slidably-mounted jaw member '7 and engaging with the serrations 8 on the shank 1, which has also formed integral therewith the jaw member 9, with which the slidably-mounted jaw member 7 is adapted to cooperate, the shank being provided with a suitable handle 10.
In operation by grasping the handle 10 the thumb can be brought into engagement with the roughened end 11 of said lever 3, and bearing down thereon the other end of the lever is raised against the tension of the spring 4:, bringing the lug 5 out' of engagement with the serrations 8 on the shank. By pulling backward with the thumb the frame 2 slides along upon the shank, bringing the lug 5 into engagement with the adjustably mounted jaw member 7 and slides it along said shank until the jaws 7 and 9 are the required distance apart, whereupon the thumb is removed from the point 11 and the spring 4 actuates the other end of said lever and holds the lug 5 in position in the sci-ration then opposite the same, and the jaw member is held rigidly in place by said lug, the opening 6 corresponding in contour to said lug 5, so that the lug fits closely therein.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A wrench comprising a shank having serrations thereon, a rigid jaw member, a frame slidably mounted on the shank, a spring-actuated lever pivoted on the frame, a slidablymounted jaw member having an aperture therein, and a lug on the lever adapted to fit in the aperture and to engage with the serrations in the shank, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
