SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,662, dated October 18, 1904.
Application filed May 25, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELWYN A. MALLoRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have inven ted certain new and useful Improve men ts in Metal Studs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference m'arlred thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing two studs connected together to produce ahollow wall or partition. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing the one member of the stud and a portion of one of the connecting-plates.

The present invention has relation to metal studs designed to take the place of ordinary wood studding and also to hold in proper position suitable metal lath or sheets for receiving and holding the plaster. The lath or plaster-holding sheets form no particular part of the present invention and may be of any suitable construction, but should be of metal, so as to produce when the different parts are properly assembled and the plaster applied a fireproof structure.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the studs proper, which are formed of any desired length, and when ahollow wall or partition is to be constructed the studs are held in proper parallelism by means of the connecting-bars 2, which connecting-bars are formed of a length to correspond with the distance between the inner edges of the parallel studs.
For the purpose of holding the studs in proper relation one with the other the bars 2 are provided with the divided tangs 3, which divided tangs are bent around the studs, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and their out r ends bent or hooked over the outer faces of the studs.

ably grooved; but the form of the groove may be varied without departing from the nature of my invention, or in some instances the outer face may be straight.
The studs are each formed of asingle piece of metal bent into substantially rectangular form, and the edges of the studs upon the opposite side from that to which the plasterholding lath or sheets are to be attached are open, or preferably so, the object being to save material and also to allow cement to be placed between the flanges of the studs, ii dc sired.
The lath-attaching edges of the studs are provided with a series of slots 4, which slots are cut through the material or punched and the severed edges of the slots 4 bent inward, as illustrated in Fig. 2, with the edges in close proximity to each other, so that they will bind the staples 5, which staples are for the purpose of holding the lath or sheets, as the case may be.
It will be understood that as the staples 5 or their equivalents are driven into the slots the edges of the slots will impinge the staples and securely hold them in proper position.
It will be understood by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to produce a stud for building purposes that will be light and inexpensive and well adapted for the purpose designed.
I do not desire to be confined to any particular shape of the cross-section, as the only object is to provide a metal stud to which staples or their equivalents may be attached and held in proper position.
By providinga series of slots and spacing them from each other i. am enabled to provide means for properly connecting the lath or plaster-holding device without weakening the stud, and at the same time the slots being comparatively short they will not open, so as to cause the staples to become loose, and that each staple has its individual slot, so that there is no danger of loosening the staples already driven by driving an additional number of staples.
In the drawings I have illustrated the edges of the studs provided with the slots inclined toward each other, by which arrangement the slots may be located at the apex of the grooves thus formed, and thereby form to a certain extent guide-surfaces to direct the points of the staples or their equivalents to the slots 4.
The studs proper may be formed of any desired length, and in case long studs are required sections may be connected together by riveting or otherwise; but when so connected together they are to constitute a continuous stud throughout its entire length regardless of the number of sections.
Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a metal stud, the outer face thereof provided with a groove, a series of slots formed in the apex' otthe groove, the edges of said slots extended toward the inner edge of the stud, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of two parallel studs, each provided with grooves upon their outer faces,slots formed in the apexes of the grooves, bars provided with divided tangs and the tangs adapted to be bent around the faces of the studs and into the grooved faces, and staples adapted to be located through the slots, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
