DOUBLE-SPRING FRICTION DRAFT-.RIGGING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,795, dat d une '7, 1904. Application filed February 24., 1904. Serial No. 195,040. (NoinodeL) To all whom, it may concern.-
- BeitknownthatI,FEEDEEIoKB.TowNsEND, a citizen of the United States, residingin Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Spring Friction Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to friction spring draft-rigging for railway-cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a friction draft-rigging of a strong, simple, efficient, and durable construction, composed of few parts and having a very powerful directacting spring resistance in connection witha frictional resistance without undulyincreasing the length of the draft-rigging as a whole resultthat is to say, it consists, in connection" with a draw-bar and draw-bar yoke or extension secured thereto, apair ofside plates or stopcastings secured to the center sills or framework of the car, and a pair of followers fitting between the upper and lower limbs of the draw-bar extension or yoke, of a longitudinally-sliding laterally-oblong friction-shell havinga closed rear end abutting against the rear follower and adapted to be alternately moved with the draw-bar by one'follower and held stationary by the other follower, two parallel longitudinally arranged springs fiting side by side within said laterally-oblong friction-shell, a pair of oppositely-disposed laterally-oblong wedges, one bearing against the front follower and the other against thetwo parallel springs, a pair of wide laterally-oblong longitudinally-sliding friction-blocks having exterior friction-faces bearing against the upper and lower wide interior friction-faces of said friction-shell, and a pair of longitudinally-sliding narrow friction-blocks having upright exterior friction-faces in sliding frictional engagement with the narrow upright interior friction-faces of said longitudinally-sliding friction-shell. The laterally-oblong longitudinally-sliding friction-shell, by reason of its laterally-extended fiat bearing against the follower at its rear end and the cooperative action of the friction-blocks, wedges, and follower at its opposite end, operates to equalize any difference of tension and resistance in the two parallel springs, and thus to prevent any improper tilting of the draw-bar or diagonal or twisting strain on the draft-rigging.
My invention also consists in'the novel con: struction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a friction draft-rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is across-section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail perspective View of one of the two wide longitudinally-sliding frictionblocks. Fig. 5 is a crosssection on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation, and Fig. 7 is a detail front view, of' one of the wedges.

F is a longitudinally-sliding laterally-oblong friction shell or case having a closed rear end f abutting directly against the rear follower C and fitting between the upper and lower limbs or members of the draw-bar extension or yoke B The sliding friction-shell F has an externally-projecting rim f", furnished with a notch or recess f to receive the upper limb or member of the draw-bar yoke B and thus cause the yoke itself to center or guide the friction-shell or hold the yoke and shell centrally in relation to each other. he parallel side-by-side springs E c and E e fit inside the laterally-oblong friction-shell and at their rear ends bear directly against the closed end f of the shell. The laterally-oblong friction-shell F has at its front end or portion two wide horizontal interior frictionfacesf and two narrow upright friction-faces f", all of the friction-faces being in planes parallel to the line of draft. The friction-faces f f preferably have inserted wearing-plates f so that they can be replaced or removed when worn and so that the wearing-faces may be of adifferent material, if desired, from the friction-faces of the sliding friction-blocks H H. Inside the laterally-oblong sliding friction-shell E there are two laterally-oblong sliding friction-blocks H H, having exterior horizontal friction-faces it h in sliding frictional engagement with the corresponding horizontal friction-faces f of the shell F, and two narrow longitudinallysliding frictionblocks H H, having exterior upright friction-faces it h in sliding frictional engagement with the corresponding upright interior friction-faces f 0f the friction-shell F. Each of the sliding friction-blocks H H has at each end thereof an inclined or wedging face If, contacting with the corresponding inclined or wedging faces g of the two oppositely-disposed laterally-oblong wedges GG". Each of the wedges Gr G has four inclined or wedging faces g, one for each of the frictionblocks H H. The rear laterally-oblong wedge G bears against the front ends of the two parallel springs E E, and the front laterally-oblong wedge G bears against the front follower C, beinginterposed between said follower and the friction-blocks H H.
In buffing the front follower and the wedges Gr Gr and. friction-blocks H H move with the draw-bar, while the rear follower and friction-shell F are held stationary by the rear stops of the side plates or stop-castings E. In pulling the action is the reverse, the rear follower and friction-shell F moving with the draw-bar and the front follower, wedges, and friction-blocks being held stationary by the front stops on the side plates or stop-castings.
I claim 1. In a friction draft-rigging the combination with a draw-bar and d raw-bar extension or yoke, of side plates or stop-castings, two parallel longitudinally-arranged springs,alatorally-oblong, longitudinally-sliding frictionshell having two wide and two narrow interior friction-faces, two laterally-oblong and.
two narrow longitudinally -sliding frictionblocks having exterior friction-faces in sliding frictional engagement with the interior friction-faces of said shell, and furnished each with an inclined or wedging face at each end thereof, and a pair of oppositely-disposed laterally-oblong wedges, substantially as speci- Iied.
2. In a friction draft-rigging the eombination with a draw-bar and dra\\'-bar extension or yoke, of side plates or stop-castings, two parallel, longitudinally-arranged springs, a laterally-oblong, longitudinally-sliding friction-shell having two wide and two narrow interior friction-faces, two laterally-oblong and two narrow longitudinally-sliding frictionblocks having exterior friction-faces in sliding frictional engagement with the interior friction-faces of said shell, and furnished each with an inclined or wedging face at each end thereof, and a pair of oppositely-disposed oblong wedges, said friction-shell having an external recess or notch to receive one limb of the draw-bar extension or yoke, to cause the laterally-oblongfriction-shell to be maintained centrally of the draw-bar extension, substantially as specified.
3. In a friction draft-rigging the eonibiinttion with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, side plates and followers, of a laterally-ol)lon g, longitudinally-sliding friction -shell, longitudinally-sliding friction-blocksinside the shell, a pair of longitudinally-extending springs arranged side by side within said shell, and a. wedge for causing said friction-blocks to be forcibly pressed and held in sliding frictional engagement with said shell, substantially as specified.

In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and draw-bar extension or yoke, of side plates or stop-castings, two parallel longitudinally-arranged springs, a laterally-oblong, longitudinally-sliding frictionshell havingtwo wide and two narrow interior friction -faces, two laterally-oblong and two narrow longitudinally-sliding frictiondiloeks having exterior friction-faces in sliding fric tional engagement with the interior frictionfaces of said shell, and furnished each with an inclined or wedging face at each end thereof, and a pair of oppositely-disposeil, laterallyoblong wedges, said friction-shell having a closed rear end against which one end of the springs bear, substantially as specified.
