SPECIFICATION part of Letters Application filed May 2, 1903.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES M. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Steps of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification. I

The purpose of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and desirable improve-s ment in the construction of steps for carriages and like vehicles.

The said improvement consists, essentially, of providing a scraping device for cleaning the boots or shoes of those entering the vehicle, whereby cleanliness of the vehicle and comfort of the persons riding therein is subserved in an obvious manner.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of a vehicle step,showing the improvement thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view ofa modified form of scraping device, same being adapted for detachment from the step-standard. Figs. 2 and 4 are sectional views.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

It is well known that persons riding in vehicles of all kinds often find it necessary to alight from the vehicle upon muddy ground, and thus the mud or other like matter is usually carried within the vehicle upon return of theoccupant thereto. It is desired to obviate the discomfort attendant to the occupant of the vehicle when the mud is still retained upon his boots or shoes, and to accomplish this a scraping attachment is provided upon the vehicle-step, and being conveniently Patentjii'o. 753,1 3 34, dated March 1, Serial No. 155,344. (Nomodehl disposed-same may be'utilized to remove the mud or the like from the boot of the occupant as he entersthe vehicle.

The step'l is illustrated in the drawings as of ordinary type depending from the vehiclebody and secured thereto by the standard or arm 2. Upon the standard or arm 2 are formed lateral extensions 3, which are preferably projected from opposite sides of the said standard or arm and which maybe of any substantial size necessary. The extensions 3 are preferably integrally formed with the standard or arm in the process of manufacture of the same. The extensions 3 may be formed with the edge upon the uppermost portions thereof, as shown at 3", to facilitate the removal of the mud or whatever he the foreign material carried by the boot or shoe. As above mentioned, it is preferred to form the extensions integrally with the standard or arm 2. However, I do not necessarily restrict myself to this exact form, but show a modified construction of the scraping'device in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this form of the invention a scraping-bar 4 is utilized, and this bar 4 is provided at a point intermediate its ends with an open slot 5. The standard or arm of the step is adapted to be received by the open slot 5, and a clamp-block 6, which 'closes the slot 5, is adapted to embrace the standard or arm in such a manner that the same may be substantially held in position upon the arm. The clamp-block 6 is secured in position by removable fastenings 7, so that should the scraping attachment be damaged through breakage of the extending portions thereon the same may be readily removed and the attachment quickly replaced. When the modified form of improvement is used, the end portions will constitute the extensions and may be of structure in accordance with the form of the integral extensions in the particulars before mentioned. The extensions may be formed at any point found most convenient upon the standard, and, of course, relative to the removable scraping device the same could be readily placed in different positions upon the step standard or arm 2.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a vehiclestep, a scraper applied to the standard of the step and comprising similar scraper extensions projected from the opposite side of the arm to provide a cleaner for each foot, said standard forming a stop to limit the lateral movement of the foot when drawing it across the scraper.

2. In combination with a vehicle-step, a scraper applied to the standard thereof and comprising similar scraper extensions or members projected from opposite sides of the standard to provide a scraper for each foot, said scraper members being adjustable toward and from the plane of the step, the standard forming a stop to limit the lateral movement of the foot when drawing it across the scraper.

3. In combination with a vehicle-step, a scraper applied to the standard of the step limit the lateral movement of the foot in drawing same across the scraper members.
