'f M s TO ALL lWHM IT MAY CONCERN:
.Be'it known that L-,ANDREW STRUBE, of Frederick, inthe county of Frederick, and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Striking-Device for Blacksmiths; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereoi`,vref'erence being had. to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters Aof reference marked thereon. Y l, ,i 'A
In theanneked drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a base or'platform uponwhich my i .machine is erected. Secured in a vertiealposition near oneend of this platform, is a sleeve,l O. representsV a metallic frame, `which may he either cast or wrought. This frame has a long slot made vertically in it, andl themetal ofthe frame at the sides of the'slot is V-sha'ped, so as to* retain and guide a slide, N, which-is'plaeed in said slot. A stem-projects from the centre of the lower end of this frame, and passes down'into the sleeve C, and may bethere stationed by means of a setfscrew. 'The slide N is adjusted in the slot of the frameby means of a screw, which stands in a. vertical position, and which is provided with a. crank-handle at its upper end, by means of which itis operated. On Vone side of thesl'ide N aretwo ears, W, between which one end of a socket, L, is pivoted. The handle O of any 'blacksmiths hammer canl be inserted and secured in the outer end of this socket. Cast crossw'ise of'the socket Lis a shaft or ban-S, which has journals formed upon each of its ends. `Upon one side ofv'the .frame Dj'noar itslower end, arel the ears e e, between which one end of a lever, F, is pivoted. This lever'F has a crank', F', formed upon its other end, and this crank has itsouter'end turn'ed down a little, and inserted in a slot in the innerv end of a treadlc, E. .Thistreadle is hinged at its outer Y represents across-bar, secured to the lever F. Gr and H represent two s'cts'of bars, whose inner ends`- are passed over the journals atth'e extremities of' the cross-shaft'S, the outer ends of one set of bars, G G, being secured upon .the-ends of cross-bar Y', and theouter ends ofthe other set, H H, being secured upon the 'ends of a cross-bar, Z." TheV cross-bar Z has a mortise or square hole through it, and through this hole passes'.
a lever, I. The bar Z is adjustable upon the lever by an ordinary vset-screw. The lower en d of lever I is pivvoted to anvarrn', which projects from the frame D, near its-lower end. 'J represents a strong spring, one end of whichl is Asecured to the'frame Dg'while the other end is connected to the lever I. This s pringJ bearsthe lever I outward from the frame D, 4and acting upon thehammer-han'dle through bars Z and-ll, it causes the hammer to rise, while thetreadle E, acting npon'said Ahandle through barsGr and causes the hammer to descend. By
meansof the screw K the slide N, to which the handle-socket Lis pivoted, is adjusted vertically, and the length of stroke of-the hammer regulated. :Byl raising the slide the stroke is shortened, andrbylowering it the stroke is lengthen'ed. This effect may be'obtained also by rasin'gor lowering the bar-Z upon the lever I. vBy lowering'said barthe strokeis shortened, and by raising it the stroke'is lengthened. B represents the anvil upon 'which thehammer is designed to play.
This device may-be used for vseveral anvils, as the treadle'E may be shiftedancl the frame D turned par- .tially around in the sleeve C,slo that the hammer will strike upon any anvil in its radius. The operator, by
using thei'oot upon theltreadle, can dispense easily with the use of a striker.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I' claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
p Al. The arrangement ofthe treadle E and lever F with the bars G Gr, socket L, and adjustable frame D, as
and for the purpose set forth. 4 p
2. Thearrangement of the-lever I, springJ, and movable crossbar Z with the bars H H, socketL, and slide N, with its screw' K, as and for the purpose specified. I 4 I In 'testimony that IA claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 12th day of February, 186.8.
i ANDREW STRUBE.
