Description
UNITED STATES Patented January 5, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHATELAINE.
srncrrxcafrron forming part of Len-,ers Patent No. 748,846, dated January 5, 1904. Application filed February 7, 1902. Serial No. 93,059. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT R. DEBACHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and 5 State of New York, have invented a new and usefui Improvement in Chatelaines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in chatelainee, and has for its object to provide an improved means for positively clamping the chatelaine to a belt or skirt-band.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the chatelaine as in use in connection with a belt. Fig. 2 is a side or edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a back view of the chatelaine with the belt removed. Fig. 4is a vertical central section from front to rear through the chatelaine in the plane of the line A A of Fig. 1 with the belt removed. Fig. 5 is a face View of the blank which forms the front and back plates of the chatelaine. Fig. 6 is a face View of the clamping-plate, and Fig. 7 is a side View of the thumb-screw for operating the clamping-plate.
The belt is denoted by 1.
2 and 3, and they are preferably formed by bending a metal blank so as to bring the frontend back plates substantially parallel with each other and spaced a distance apart sufficient to freely receive the belt 1 between them.
The spring-actuated clamping-plate 4 is interposed between the front and backr plates 2 and 3 and is riveted or otherwise permanently secured at its iower end to the front.
the cup-shaped recess 7. It will thus be seen that as the thumb-screw 8 is screwed in- The front and' back plates of the chatelaine are denoted byv bearing against the clamping-plate 4 within Y wardly the clamping-plate will be forced positively toward the back plate 3 of the chatelaine for clamping the belt between them, and thereby locking the chatelaine to the belt. Y
The clamping-plate 4 is held under sufficient spring tension to cause it to swing back away from the back plate as the thumbscrew 8 is unscrewed for releasing the chatelaine from the belt.
To provide a bearing for the thumb-screw 8, I permanently secure tothe front plate 2 a hollow screw-threaded lug 9, which is engaged by the thumb-screw 8.
The front plate 2 may be provided with recesses 11, 12, and 13 for the reception of locking- tongues 14, 15, and 16, carried by an 0rnamented face-place 17, which may be thus clamped to the front plate to give an attractive appearance to the chatelaine. The faceplate may be ornamented, as shown, by covering it with some suitable material-such, for instance, as leather. The front plate 2 may further be provided with a loop or eye 18, formed by bending a lug projecting from the lower end of the front plate, which eye is adapted to receive a ring 19, which may be used for supporting a bag or the like.
In a chatelaine, the combination with a blank bent to form a front plate, a back plate and a loop or eye for the attachment of a bag, of a spring-actuated clamping-plate interposed between the said plates and permanently secured at its lower end to the front plate, and having its lupper end bent at au angle to the body of the clamping-plate to form a clamping-jaw, and a thumb-screw having a screw-threaded engagement with the front plate, bearing against the clampingplate for forcing it toward the back plate as the screw is screwed inwardly, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day'of February, 190,2.
ROBERT R. DEBACHER.
