UNITED STATES Patented June 30, 1903.
WILLIAM J. BEST, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,037, dated June 30, 1903.
Application Elea nach 21, 190s.
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and use'- ful Improvements in Folding Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding carriers, and more especially to such carriers adapted for carrying stove-wood; and its object is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable folding device, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed ont in the claims.
My invention consists, essentially, of the combination and arrangement of a number of strips or bars of Wood or other suitable material secured to each other in the manner hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective of my device opened up for use; Fig. 2, the same folded and out of use, and Fig. 3 a reduced elevation of the same as it appears when iilled with stove wood.
A A represent the side rails, and B B the end rails, of the platform for supporting the wood, the rails B being located beneath the rails A and a short distance from the respective ends thereof and securely fastened thereto, thus forming a rigid rectangular open frame or platform to support the Wood.
To the respective ends of the rails A A are pivoted the posts C, by means of suitable bolts or rivets E. When said posts are turned to a vertical position, as in Fig. 1, they are engaged at the inner sides with the transverse rails B, and thus stopped or held in vertical Serial No. 148,924. (No model.)
position, and when turned in folded position they lie parallel with and between the side rails A and are again stopped in this position by the said transverse rails B. Near the upper ends of these posts are transverse han- `dlebars D, located on the outside of said posts and securely attached thereto, which position removes them a sufficient distance from the wood to permit of grasping the bars for lifting and carrying the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The combination of a platform, posts pivoted to the respective ends of the platform and adapted to turn from vertical to horizontal position, and transverseYhandle-bars attached to the posts.
2. The combination of a platform composed of side and end rails secured to each other, posts pivoted to the respective ends of the side rails, and transverse handlebars attached to the posts.
3. The combination of two side rails, two end rails attached to the side rails near the ends thereof, posts pivoted to the respective ends of the side rails and engaging the end rails, and handle-bars secured to the posts.
4. The combination of two side rails, two
end rails secured to the under side of the side rails and near the respective ends thereof,
f WILLIAM J'. EEST.
