PATENT ()FFICE.
\VILLIAM B. DOLSEN, OF MACON, MISSOURI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,531, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed May 14, 1902. Serial No. 107,357. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. DOLsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Macon, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hermetic Gaseous-Liquid-Compress Cask, of which the following is a'specification.
My invention relates to hermetic gaseousliquid-compress' casks; and the objects are to provide an improved air-tight cask for the preservation of gaseous substances that it is absolutely necessary to prevent coming in contact with air, to afford facilities for the withdrawal of any quantity desired, and retain the balance in perfect preservation.
Further objects and advantages will ap pear in the following description and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this description, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my cask when there is no gas within the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my cask transverse to the section shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the follower. Fig. 4:
is a perspective View of the gasket, and Fig[ 5 is a perspective view of the gasket-clamping plate.
A cylindrical body 1 is open at the top and has the bottom closed either by an integral disk or by a removable flanged disk 2, which fits into the enlarged end 3 of said body and is held therein by tie-rode, having lateral eX- tensions 5, which bear against the disk, and screw-threaded ends 6, which pass through openings 7 in an annulus 8, supported against the edges of the cylindrical body around the open top end. Nuts 9 are fitted onto the screw-threaded ends of the tie-rods and securely hold the tie-rods against the flanged disk 2.
Working within the cylindrical body is a plunger or follower 10, which compresses the liquid within the cask and is moved by a screw 11, which works in a yoke 12, supported upon the annulus 8. The screw-rod works loosely through a cap 13, fitted upon a hollow cylindrical extension 14 of the follower 10, and bears through the medium of a nut 15 against a spiral spring 16, mounted in said extension 14. The follower 10is beveled at 17 on its upper edge, and a wedge-shaped gasket 18 is fitted upon the said beveled edge. A clamping-plate 19 surrounds the extension 14 and bears against the gasket, being clamped thereon and forced against the inner walls of the cylindrical body by nuts 20, fitted on threaded studs 21, carried by the follower 10. A valved outlet 22, carried by the removable disk 2, is provided for the cask.
The cask is filled in any suitable manner, and the screw 11 is then turned to compress the liquid within the same. Owing to the elastic or yielding connection between the follower and the screw, the follower upon a portion of the liquid being drawn from the cask moves independently of the screw to compress the liquid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with the cylindrical cask, and a follower working therein, having its upper edge beveled, of a wedge-shaped gasket fitted upon the beveled edge of the follower, and aclamping-plate havingawedgeshaped depending portion adapted to be projected below the plane of the top of the follower and bearing against the upper part of the gasket to force it outwardly against the side of the cask.
2. The combination with the cylindrical cask, and a follower working therein, having its upper edge beveled, of a wedge-shaped gasket fitted upon the beveled edge of the follower, a clamping-plate having a depending wedge -shaped portion, screw threaded studs carried by the follower, and nuts for the studs holding the clamping-plate to the follower and against the upper part of the gasket to force the same outwardly against the sides of the cask.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with the follower, of a hollow cylindrical extension on the follower, a spiral spring within the extension, a cap fitted upon the upper end of the extension, a screw working loosely through the cap, and a nut on the screw bearing against the spiral spring on one side and on the other side adapted to contact with the cap to hold the follower and screw together.
WILLIAM B. DOLSEN.
