Be it known that I, FRANK G. KAMMERER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certainV new and useful Improvements in .Glass-Rinsing Devices; and I do hereby declare that the fol,- lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference .beingvhad to the'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specicatiou. This invention relates to improvements in devices for rinsing tumblers and V'like articles,the'same being more especially adapted for use in vconnection with liquid-dispensing apparatus, soda-fountains, and the like, while being capable of use for other purposes.
Theinvention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

As shown in said drawings, A indicatesa Vertical water-delivery pipe, thel upper end of which constitutes the discharge-nozzle 'of the rinsing device and which is connectedgat its lower end with a water-supply pipe B.- Said delivery-pipeA is surrounded by annular walls C and D, which forman annular channel or recess E .to receive-the l edge on the lower margin of a tumbler when yplaced.-

The outer annular wall C is shown as supported from or upon the' pipe A by means of a circular plate F,-the same having a central aperture for the passage of vsaid pipe A and said plate being secured to the lowerpartof the pipe. At its outer edge the said plate F is provided with a depending annular liange which iits within the annular wall C and is secured thereto by screws or otherwise. The outer margin of the plate F is shown as arranged in contact with the outer margin of the Iiange D', and these parts will preferably be secured together, so that the plate F supports the lower` part of the Wall D concentrically with respect to the pipe A. The upper par-tof .said inner wall D is preferably detlected-'inwardlyor made of dome shape, so as to lit around the upper part of said pipe A, the said inner Wall thereby serving to brace orhold from la-teral movement the upper end of said pipe A.' Holes d d for the drainage of water from the recess E are formed in the i fiange D and the plate F. The annular walls Cy and D with the flange D form the outer andinner walls. of the annular receptacle E tol receive the lower margin of a glass or tumbler placed in au inverted position over the delivery-pipe A, said outer and .inner walls serving to aid in holding the glass or tumbler in place on or over the delivery-pipe and the l receptacle serving to hold water to aid in the rinsing of the edge of the glass, as will here inafter more fully appear.
Beneath the several parts described is located adrainage cup or receptacle G, adapted to receive water escaping from the upper part ofthe apparatus andconduct the same to a drainage-pipeH. Said drainage-pipe H is shown as connected centrally with the cup G 5 at a point beneaththe pipe A. The supplypipe' B is shown as connected with the pipe 5A by means of a fitting B, provided with a double bend, which brings its vertical part or stem b, which passes through the cup G, at one-.side of the-pipeII. Said drainagepipe is shown as affording the means for supporting lor holding inplace the cup G aswell as the'other parts of the apparatus. A tight joint is formed betweenV the vertical part b fotthe ttingBf and the cup G by means of a collar I, 'which is ylocated beneath the cup and shapedon its upper surface to correspend Withthe inclination or curvature ofthe Vbottom of the cup, the fitting B' being provided above the'collar I,with a liange b', betweenvwhich and the collar I the metal of the cup' G around the margins of theaperture therein is'clamped by the action of a nut t', applied to the stem beneath the collar.
The lower margins of the outer Wall C of the receptacle E are shown as extended downwardly past the-plates F to the bottom of the cup G,small drainage-openings c being formed e at the lower marginv of the lower part of'the wall C, so as to permit water which may overflow from the recess E and which falls into the outer part of the cup G outside of the wall C to reach the inner part of said cup and the drainage-pipe I-I.
New referring to the devices shownv for controlling the fiow of water from the upright delivery-pipe A, devices are provided as follows: Said pipe A is provided with an interior downwardly-facing valve-seat a, which is preferably and conveniently formed at the lower end of said pipe A or at the point where 'said pipe A joins the fitting B', but which may be located elsewhere in the pipe A, as may be found convenient or desirable.
.I indicates a valve disk or closure which fits the seat a and is attached to a valve-stein K, which reaches upwardly through the pipe A to the upper end thereof and has attached to it an enlargement or head L, which moves freely in the upper end of the pipe A. The head L is slightly smaller in diameter than the interior of that part of the pipe A which surrounds it, so that a narrow annular outlet for water is formed between the head and the upper end of the pipe. Between said head L and an upwardly-facing shoulder et' in the pipe A is located a coiled expansively-acting spring M, which by upward pressure on the head L serves to normally hold the valve-disk J in contactwith the seat a. Said head L is so arranged or placed at such elevation above the bottom of the recess E that a tumbler placed over the upper end of the pipeA with its lower margin in said recess E will rest upon or be supported by the head L, with its lower edge above the bottom of the said recess E, au'd the spring Mis made of such strength that it will hold the valve closed under the weight of a tumbler so resting on the head L. As a result of this construction it is apparent that a tumbler placed upon the apparatus in the position shown in dotted lines will have no effect upon the valve .I and will be held or retained in the position shown with its weight resting on the head L. By pressing downwardly upon the tumbler, however, the spring M will be compressed and the valve J opened, so that a supply of water may be delivered through the pipe A at any time for the purpose of rinsing the tumbler by merely pressing downward upon the tumbler as it rests upon the-apparatus. rlhe head L being made somewhat smaller in diameter than the open upper end or nozzle of the delivery-pipe A water will be thrown in the form of an annular stream, jet, or spray upwardly from the pipe against the bottom of the tumbler and will spread 0r be deflected outwardly thereby, so that it will descend along the inner surface of the tumbler, and thereby rinse the entire surface thereof. The openings e in the bottom of the annular recess E are made of such small size that the water will run from the said recess more slowly than it is supplied thereto by the pipe A, so that when pressure is applied to the tumbler for opening the valve the water will rise in said recess around the lower edge of the tumbler, and thereby rinse the outer as well as the inner surface of ,the marginal part thereof. If the tumbler be held depressed so long that the water overflows from the recess E, the escaping water will be caught in the outer rim of the cup G and will find its way to the drainage-pipe.
In order to prevent the controlling-valve being opened and water escaping from the delivery-pipe by downward pressure on the head L when there is no tumbler 'in place on the apparatus, I make said head of tapered or conical form and provide it at its upper end with a sharp point which serves to prevent sufficient pressure being brought thereon by the hand or finger to open the valve, it being of course understood that the presence of such sharp point is not at all detrimental to the operation of the device when a tumbler is resting thereon.
Instead of supplying the fixture B with a double bend, as shown in Fig. l, the supplypipe may be straight and arranged concentrically with respect to the drainage-opening of the cup G, this construction giving a more symmetrical form to these parts of the device. Such a construction is illustrated in Fig. 3, in which a straight pipe-fitting B2 is used, and the cup G is attached to a circular fitting N, made larger in diameter than the fitting B2 and through which the latter passes. The fitting N is shown as provided with holes n in its top through which the Waste water enters the same from the cup G and as having a waste-pipe O leading from one side thereof, the bottom wall of said tting being provided with an opening for the passage of the lower end of the fitting B2, which latter is screwthreaded and provided above the said bottom wall with a shoulder b2 and below the same with a nut b3.
I claim as my inventionl. A device for the purpose set forth comprising an upright delivery-pipe provided with an internal, downwardly-facing valveseat, a valve-closureengaging said seat and provided with a stem which rises through the said pipe, an enlarged head on the stem which slides in the upper end of the pipe and projects above the same, and a coiled, valve-actuating spring which surrounds the upper part of the stem and bears at its upper end against the bottom surface of said head and at its lower end against an annular, upwardlyfacing shoulder located within the pipe above the valve-seat.
2. A device for the purpose set forth comprising an upright deliverypipe provided with an internal valve, means for actuating the valve comprising a downwardly-yielding head which projects above the top of the pipe, an annular receptacle surrounding the delivery-pipe consisting of inner and outer, sheetmetal side walls arranged concentrically with said delivery-pipe, anda bottom wall connect- IOO ing said inner and outer walls, said annular receptacle being adapted to receive the lower edge of a tumbler placed over the upper end of the delivery-pipe and being provided with a drainage-opening, and a lower cup or receptacle arranged concentrically with the delivery-pipe below the bottom of said annular receptacle,and provided with a drainage-pipe, and a water-supply pipe which passes through the bottom of said lower cup Or receptacle and is connected with the delivery-pipe.
3. IA device for the purpose set forthcomprising an upright delivery-pipe, an annular receptacle surrounding the delivery-pipe consisting of inner and outer sheetmetal side walls arranged concentrically with said delivery-pipe and a bottom wall connecting said inner and Outer Walls, said annular receptacle being provided with a drainage-opening in its bottom, a plate which is attached to the lower end of the delivery-pipe and to the bottom of said annular receptacle, and serves to support said receptacle concentrically withV respect to the pipe, a lower cup or receptacle arranged concentrically below the annular receptacle,and a water-supplypipe which passes' through the bottom of the said lower cup or receptacle and is attached to the'lower end of the delivery-pipe.
4. A device for the purpose set forth, com- 3o prising an upright delivery-pipe, an annular receptacle surrounding the delivery-pipe and consistingof inner and outer annular walls and a bott-om wall connecting the same, said annular receptacle being provided with 'a 35 drainagefopening, a lower cup or receptacle arranged concentrically with the deliverypipe below the bottom of said annularreceptacle, and provided with a drainage-pipe and a water-supply pipe which rises through the 4o bottom of the said lower cup or receptacle and is attached to the lower end of the delivery-pipe; the outer side wall of said annular receptacle being extended downwardly below the bottom thereof, into contact with the lower ,4 5
