are utilized for conducting from one point to another and ordinarily under substantial pressure steam, Water, gas, or an analogous flowing medium and for the purpose of controlling the passage or movement of such steam, water, gas, or analogous medium interiorly therealong, such devices being commonly known as gate-valves.-
The object of this invention is to provide a gate-valve which shall be simple, inexpen sive, and novel as regards construction, which shall be positive and reliablein operation, which shall insure a marked degree of convenience to the user in applying the same to practical purposes, particularly in regulating and equalizing the pressure to which the valve-gate, which constitutes an element thereof, is subjected in service, and which shall possess certain well=defined advantages over prior analogous constructions.
The invention consists in the employment of certain parts novel as to form; inthe novel disposition and arrangement of'the various parts thereof; in certain combinations of the latter, and in certain details of construction, all of which will be specifically'referred to hereinafter and set forth in the-appended claims. p t
- The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and as to said drawings 7 V V Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section,illustrating a gate-valve embodying my said improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view illustrating the construction of the valve-gate which I employ. Fig. 2 is a detail view designed'toillustrate more clearly certain of the novel elements of my improved gate-valve and the manner in which they cooperate in practical service. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of said valve, a portion of the easing being broken away to more clearly illustrate the interior construction. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, a portion of the valve-gate there shown being broken away to better disclose certain of the elements of my 'im proved valve.
In a general sense my improved gate-valve comprises a casing, a valve-gate operatively arranged within said casing and having an opening leading through it from one to the opposite side thereof, a device for controlling said opening and movable with said valvegate, means for operating the latter, and a controller whereby said device may be duly operated under certain conditions.
Having reference. to the accompanying drawings,-as there shown my improved valve -'com prises certain elements which takenseparately are without novelty, such elements being the casing 2, combined bonnet and bracket 3, stem 4, and hand-wheel 5. These parts are assembled and operate in the usual and wellknown manner.
The threaded stem 4 carries a valve-gate 6, the latter being engaged by the stem 4. in such manner as to accompany said stem in its movements in the operation of opening and closing the valve and also to shift independently ofsaid stem to a seating engagement with one or the other of the valve-seats 7 7', accordin'gto the direction of the pressure applied to "such gate in practical service.

For revoluble movement within the opening 9 I arrange a plug 10 or analogous device, the same having a transverse opening 11 near its inner end, so that upon said plug or device 10 being properly rotated its opening 11 will be brought into registry with the opening 8, and thus insure an unobstructed passage by way of said opening 8 and the opening 11 from one side of the gate 6 to the opposite side thereof, and upon said plug or device being further duly rotated it will serve to cut ofi communication by way of the open ing 8 from one side of the gate 6 to the opposite side thereof after the manner of a plugvalve.
It will be observed that the plug or device 10 accompanies the gate 6 at all timesin the latters movements with the stem 4. It is further essential that means whereby when the gate 6 occupies its closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the plug 10 or analogous device may be grasped and rotated or otherwise controlled, and to this end I provide the easing 2 with an opening 12, into which is screwed or otherwise firmly seated a hollow keeper 13, which serves to retain in position for service the controller 14. As here shown, the controller 14 extends centrally and longitudinally through the keeper 13, admits of rotative movement within said keeper, and is arranged tocoincidein alinement with the plug 10 when the gate 6 is closed.
The controller 14 is provided at its outer end with a handle 15 or analogous medium, which may be grasped by the user when wishing to rotate said controller.
It is important that the controller 14 and plug 10 shall cooperate as a unit under a rotative impulse imparted to said controller and under the condition of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1. To this end I have shown the plug 10 as having at its outer end a transverse recess 16, adapted to receive the transverse rib 17, with which the controller 14 is provided at its inner end, all as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
\Vhere the foregoing construction is employed, it will be observed that when handle 15 occupies the position indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 and the controller 14 and plug 10 are accordingly positioned or adjusted communication by way of the opening 8 from one side of the gate 6 to the opposite side'thereof interiorly of the casing 2 is cut 011 by the plug 10, and gate 6 is accordingly locked against movement away from its closed position. Now upon handle 15 being swung downwardly or upwardly ninety degrees from the position it is illustrated as occupying in Fig. 3 of the drawings and the controller 14 and plug 10 being accordingly adjusted opening 11 will register with opening 8, thus establishing communication between'the interior portions of the casing 2 at opposite sides of the gate 6, and the latter may be moved away from its closed position, as through the medium of the hand-wheel 5 and stem 4, in the usual way. Under this operation of the parts the plug 10 breaks its engagement with the controller 14 and accompanies the gate 6. \Vhen the gate 6 returns again to its closed veaeve position, the rib 17 accordingly entersthe recess 16, and the plug 10and controller 14 are then again in readiness for rotative operation as a unit.
To better facilitate the. foregoing operation of the parts, I prefer that the gate 6 be provided with a suitable channel, as 18, at the mouth of the secondary opening 9, and to permit due lateral play on the part of the gate 6 independently of the stem 4 and to in-- sure the seating thereof against one or the other of the valve-seats? 7 the recess 16 should be somewhat greater in width than the rib.17, as will be readily understood.
The operation of my improved gate-valve will be apparent from the foregoing description thereof. Itwill be observed that inpractical service the steam, water, gas, or the like which may be conducted through the casing 2 may be readily equalized in pressure at the opposite sides or" the gate 6, which desirable result should be effected prior to any attempt being made to open the gate 6, as otherwise the pressure of such steam, water, or gas will urge said gate snugly against one of the seats 7 7, according to the course of said steam, water, or gas interiorly along the casing 22, and any attempt to move the gate 6 away from its closed position will be met by substantial friction between said valve-seat and said gate, and it will be further observed that when constructed substantially as herein described all the ad vantages of a novel, reliable,
and for this reason I do not wish' to be understood as limiting myself in the appended claims to the precise details of construction herein described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gate-valve, in combination, a casing; a gate arranged for movement within said casing, said gate having a transverse opening for the passage of a fluid or gaseous element from one side of said gate to the opposite side thereof, and having a secondary opening arranged at variance with said transverse opening and communicating therewith; a valve in said secondary opening for controlling said transverse opening; and a controller projecting through said casing for detachable engagement with said valve, the parts being disposed so that said controller and said valve will cooperate only during the closed condition of said gate, substantially as herein specified.
2. In a gate-valve, in combination, a casing; a gate arranged for movement within said casing and having openings 8 and 9, the latter intersecting the former; a plug 10in the opening 9, and therein adapted to rotate; and a rotatable controller 14, the latter on IIO gaging the plug only when said gate occupies its'closed position, and in such manner as to transmit thereto such rotative movement as may be imparted to itself, substantially as herein specified.
3. In a gate-valve, in combination, a casing;-a gate arranged for movement within said casing, and having a valve-controlled opening whereby a fluid of gaseous element may pass from one side of said gate to the opposite side thereof; and a controller projecting through said casing for detachable engagement with said valve, the parts being disposed so that said controller and said valve will cooperate only during the closed condition of said gate, substantially as herein specified.
4.. In a gate-valve, in combination, a casing; a gate arranged for movement within said casing and having an opening whereby a fluid or gaseous element may pass from one side of said casing to the'opposite side thereof; a rotatable valve carried by said gate and controlling the opening therein, said valve having a continuous, transverse groove at its outer end; and a rotatable controller for operating said valve, said controller projecting through said casing and having a tongue at its inner end adapted to occupy the groove of said valve during the closed condition only of said gate, substantially as herein specifled.
5. In a gate-valve, in combination, a casing; a gate arranged for movement within said casing and having an opening whereby a fluid or gaseous element maypass from one from its closed position, upon said controller and valve being jointly duly moved, and, with the valve carried thereby, liberated for movement away from its closed position and independently of said controller, uponsaid controller and said valve being jointly still further duly moved, substantially as herein specified.
