Description
APPLIOATION FILED FEB. 14, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
Tfr/ E? I Jig/20M. @0121 Nrrsn STATES ATENT .EFICE AUTOMATIC BOILER- FEEDJCONTROLLKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 726,813, dated April 28, 1903.
Applicationfiled February 14, 1903. Serial No. 143,357. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANCOIS X. BRUNELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Automatic Boiler-Feed Controller, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufciently full, clear, andexact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple, compact, and efficient appliance for the purpose named which can be applied to steam-boilers of various kinds and at comparatively small expense. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a front view of a boilerfeed controller embodyingl my invention, the hand-hole being shown with its closing-plate removed. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section through the controller-casing. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at line X X on Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a horizont-al section at line Y Y on Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the part marked A consists of a T-shaped body-casting having a reduced lower end opening, a full-sized top opening, and a front opening or hand-hole o., which is closed by a removable plate or cover 3, screwed or bolted to the body-casting.
C indicates a cylinder or section of wroughtiron pipe about twenty inches longiand eight inches diameter, more or less, its end screwthreaded into the upper opening of the bodycasting at 4 and its top end screw-threaded at 5 into a cap or head casting D, having an opening therein for the attachment of a steampipe S. The bodycasting, the cylindrical section, and its cap together form a rigid tubular casing or hollow standard-shaped reservoir with a continuous interior chamber, and which when in use is arranged in upright position in the. manner -illustrated at some convenient position near the boiler.
In the side of the body-casting there is arranged the feed-water-supply pipe F,threaded through the side of the body, as at 6, and having thereon at the interior a regulating stop-cock I, adapted to be opened and closed by means of a lever J, and in connection with Vvalves may be omitted, if desired.
the lever-arm there is a rod K, that extends upward within the cylinder C andl has attached to its top end a iioat-ball G, occupying nearly, but not quite, the full interior diameter of the cylinder. Said float-ball is made of sufficient strength to withstand the steampressure, and of sufficient weight to depress the valve-lever J when the Heat is permitted to descend.
At one side of the cylinder-section there are arrangedd'the three test-cocks 7, 8, and 9, and at the other side'thereofthere are arranged the water-gage heads 10, carrying the glass tube l2, all communicating with the interior of the controller section, the testcocks, gagefhe'ads, and glass gage-tube being similarv in structure to those in common use on steam-boilers in other arrangements.
When put u p for use,'the controller is connected with the steam-boiler B by a steampipe S from the top cap Dto the top or steamspace of the boiler and by a water-pipe W from the bottom of the controller-body to the lower part of the boiler, the controller being disposed in such relation to the boiler that the normal water-level L will be about half way up the cylindrical section C. The pipes S and W may be provided with shut-off valves 13 and l5 for convenience of repairs, or such When in use, steam and water from the boiler B are allowed free access to the interior of the controller-chamber through the pipes S and W. Hence in the operation the water-level in the boiler and the controller-chamber are thus maintained uniform. .As the water-level falls in the boiler'B, it also falls in the controllerchamber, and the fioatG descends, Working the lever J and opening the supply-cock I to let in more water from the supply-pipe F. Then as the water-level rises in the boiler and controller-chamber the iioat G rises and works the lever J for closing the supply-cock, thus automatically regulating the feed-water as required for maintaining the proper quantity in the boiler.
The construction herein Vshown and described provides a neat, compact, and 'eflcient appliance for the purpose specitied,'an appliance that can be economically manufactured and can be made up with all its parts put together complete and ready for shipment at too the factory, and which can then be readily and conveniently connected with any ordinary steam-boiler at the place of use by simply coupling on the pipes, as illustrated. Thus I provide a very desirable and practical means, combining the several utilities required for the indication and regulation of the Water-feed in connection with steam-generating apparatus.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
l. An automatic boiler-feed controller, consisting of the body-casting having the handhole opening and removable cover-plate therefor, the cylindrical section threaded into the top of said body and having the cap-piece threaded upon its top end, the supply-pipe entering the side of the body, a lever-actuated stop-cock arranged on said supply-pipe within the body, a [ioat within said cylindrical section, a rod connecting said float and the lever for operating the stop-cock, and pipe-connecting openings at the top and bottom ends of said controller-casing.
2. An automatic boiler-feed controller, comprising an upright tubular casing consisting of a body-casting, a cylindrical pipe-section having its ends respectively threaded into the top of said body-casting and into a top cappiece, said body and cap-piece provided with openings for attaching water and steam pipes thereto; the Water-gage heads and a plurality of test-cocks arranged on said cylindrical section, a feed-supply pipe entering said bodycasting, a regulating stop-cock arranged on said feed-su pply pipe, a float within the cylindrical pipe-section, and means connected with said float for operating said stop-cock.
3. The combination as described, With the steam-boiler and feed-Water-supply pipe; of a controller-casing comprising a body-section having the feed-supply attached thereto, a stop-cock having an actuating device at the interior of said body, a cylinder or pipe-section extending upward from said body and having the series of test-cocks and the gageheads carrying the gage-glass arranged in connection therewith, an inclosing cap on said cylinder having a pipe-attaching opening, a iioat-ball Within said cylinder, a connecting-rod from said oat controlling the actuating device of the feed-supply cock, a pipe connecting -the top of the controllerchamber with the upper part of the boiler, and a pipe connecting the bottom of said controller-chamber with the lower part of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
Vitness my hand this 10th day of February, 1903.
FRANCOIS 4X. BRUNELLE.
