0. MATHER, or WEL SVILL'E; New YORK. Letters Patent No. 71,194, dated November 19, 1867 antedated October 18, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTAGHING THILLS T0 VEHICLES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, O. L. MATHER, of Wellsville, in the county of Allegheny, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Thills to Vehicles; and I do' hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap arrangement by which the thills of buggies and one-horse carriages may be attached to the axle; and the invention consists vin 'so forming and fitting together two pins of metal that, when one of them is attached to,.the aisle, and the other to the thills, the thills are attached in the most simple andsecure manner without the aid of belts or screws. In the accompanying drawings- I Figure 1 represents a sectional view through the line a; w of fig. 2. Figure 2 is a top view. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the axle of the buggy, and B is one part of my attachment made fast thereto. 0 is the thill with the other portion of my attachment bolted to it, which portion is represented by D.. The portion B,' which is attached to the axle, is formed, as seen in the drawing, to admit the other portion D. This portion of the joint is a concave bed, a, with a central pin, 6, its mate D being concavo-convex in form, and which is niade to fit the concave bed, and which is held to its place in any'position by the central pin 6. i
This attachment is made by elevating the thills to a perpendicular position, when the two portions naturally slip together, forminga secure attachment without the aid of belts or keys. 0 c on the portion 13, to which the central pin 6 is'attached, form the side s of theconcave.
The-advantages of this arrangement are that, while it makes a secure attachment by merely raising the thills and slipping the two togetherfFit allows the thills to be removed for a tongue, whendesired, with but a moments delay and, lltSltUililOI'lS where there is not room sufiicient forthe thills to remain attached, it is but a momentswork to detach them, when they can be placed out of the way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The portion B, providedwith the concave bed a, to the sides 0 c of which the central pin 6 is attached, and part'D, with the concavoconvex end fitting into the said concave bed a, when all are constructed and arranged as herein set forth for the purpose specified. O. L. MATHER.
