SHIELD AND DRIP-CATCHER FOR CANDLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY S. NAGENGAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardenville, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields and. Drip- Uatcners for Candles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved shield and drip-catcher 'for candles; and it consists in certain constructions and combinations of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the shield and drip-catcher. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken substantially at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of two candles, each provided with the shield and drip-catcher of the invention and illustrating one particular use to which the invention may be put. Fig. 4: is a horizontal section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, but on a larger scale than the said Fig. 3.

In operation the sleeve orholderctis slipped over the end of a candle and is clamped thereon, preferably at a point near the end to be lighted, by means of the clamp. When the candle is lighted, it will be carried in a somewhat oblique position, with the dripcatcher f undermost, which latter will catch all the grease-drippings, and at the same time the shield e, being over the flame, will prevent injury to anything.

It is to be understood that the shield e may be made of any suitable material, such as mica, in which case it will serve as a shield from the heat only of the fiame, or it may be made of translucent or opaque material to serve as a shade, or it may be made of a materialhaving a burnished surface to serve as a reflector, and it is also to be understood that the invention is not limited to the construction shown, by which the shield is attached to its supporting-arm nor to the particular angular relation hereinshown between the holder a and drop-catcher.

Fig. 3 of the drawings illustrates one use for which my improved shield and drip-catcher may be employed. At a certain church festival the throats of comm unicants are blessed, and a portion of the ceremony consists in placing two lighted candles arranged in the form of a cross, as shown in Fig. 3, in proximity to the communicants throat. Articles of clothing and the hair have been frequently singed by the candle-flames in the observance of this rite, and the vestments of the officiating priest have been injured by the drippings from the candles; but it is manifest that the device of my invention obviates these unpleasant features. WVhile this is one use for the device, it is obvious that the invention is not limited to such use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is

1 1. A device for thepurpose described, comprising a sleeve or holder adapted to be slipped over a candle and provided with a spring-pressed clamping-finger to secure it to the candle; 'a flame-shield carried by said holder; and a drip-catcher also carried by said holder, as set forth.

2. Adevice for the purpose described, comprising a holder adapted to be secured on a candle; a shield-supporting arm attached to said holder at one side thereof; a shield secured to said arm; and a drip-catchersecured to said holder substantially diametrically 0pposite said arm, as set forth.

3.
