PLANT-PERT!LlZER-DISTRIBUTING RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,316, dated June 3, 1902.
Application filed October 15, 1901. Serial No. 78,747. (No model-3 To all 1071,0111, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNIE A. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the county of Garland and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Plant-Fertilizer-Distributing Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of plant-fertilizer-distributing receptacle, the object being to provide a device by means of which fertilizing fluid or; powder can be conveniently applied to any particular portion of a plant.
With this objectiu view the invention consists,essentia1ly,ofareceptaclehavingaspout projecting forwardly from the lower end there of, said spoutbeingclosed by means of avalve the operating-rod of which extends through the spout and receptacle and is provided with an operating-head adjacent to the handle of the receptacle.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plant-fertilizer-distributing receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In carrying out my invention I employ a receptacle A, preferably cylindrical in form, the upper end sloping toward the rear. The cover B is hinged to the forward end of the receptacle and is provided with a fastening means B at its free end. A spout (J of considerable length projects forwardly from the receptacle A, adjacent to the bottom thereof, said spout tapering gradually and having a valve D hingedto its forward end. An operating rod or stem E is connected to this valve D, said rod 'or stem extending entirely head for the purpose of throwing the rod or stem rearwardly and keeping the valve D normally closed. A strap-handle Gr is attached to the rear side of the receptacle.
In operation the receptacle is filled with any suitable liquid or powder and is carried by the handle G. Whenever it is desired to discharge the liquid or powder upon the plant, the ring or head. is forced inwardly, opening the valve and permitting the fertilizing fluid or powder to escape, and the moment the pressure is relieved the spring will immediately operate upon the valve-stem and close the valve. The upper end of the receptacle being made tapering toward the rear permits the receptacle to be tilted to a considerable angle without spilling any of the contents.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I elaim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a plant-fertilizer-distributing receptacle comprising a receptacle having an elongated spout projecting forwardly therefrom adjacent to the bottom of said receptacle, said spout having a valve at its forward end and a spring-actuated rod or stem attached to said valve and extending entirely through the spout and through the receptaele,'said rod or stem being provided with a ring or head upon the rear side of the receptacle adjacent to its handle, substantially as shown and described. 2. A plant-fertilizer-distributing receptacle consisting of a receptacle, the upper end of which slopes rearwardly and is provided with a hinged cover, the hinge of said cover being arranged at the forward end, an elongated tapering spout attached to the forward side of the receptacle adjacent to the bottom of the same, a valve adapted to normally close the forward end of said spout, a rod or stem connected to said valve extending entirely through the spout and receptacle, a ring or head arranged upon the rear end of said stem or rod,acoil-springsurroundingtheprojecting end between the receptacle and ring or head, and the strap-handle attached to the rear side of the receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
