ANTICHAFING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,498, dated November 12, 1901.
Application filed geptemher 16, 1901. serial No. 75,575. (No model.)
To all whom, it nwty concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH E. L. WILsoN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antichafing Devices, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved antichafing device intended to be worn about the thigh of a persons leg to prevent the chafing incident to the rubbing together of the thighs while walking.
The invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts of the antichafing device hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which'- Figure 1 is a side view of the improved antichafing device as seen when worn upon a persons thigh, a portion of the persons body and thigh being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front View thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan View of the device.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the improved antichafing device comprises a bandage consisting of a strip of soft and smooth elastic sheet-rubber a and two strips of substantially inelastic fabric 1) b, which each have one edge permanently secured by stitching or the like to the ends of the rubber strip a, and the free edges of said inelastic fabric strips are provided with an adjustable connection. In the present instance this adjustment consists of rows of eyelets 0, through which is threaded alaciu g dto adjustably fasten the two ends of the bandage together. The elastic material a should be nonporous, as thereby it will resist the moisture of the body, and thus keep soft.
To the upper edge of one of the rearmost inelastic fabric strips b is permanently secured both ends of a preferably inelastic strap 6,
which forms a suspender-loop, on which a ring f is loosely mounted, and to said ring is secured the lower end of a preferably elastic supporting-strap g, the other end of which is provided with a safety-pin h or other detachable fastening means, whereby said strap may be secured to a waistband 2' or to any garment that may be suitable for the purpose.
In practice the bandage is placed around the upperportion of one of apersons thighs in this instance it is shown on the left thigh with the smooth elastic sheet-rubber strip coon the inside-that is, adjacent the other leg. The lacing cl is adjusted and tied, so as to fit the bandage comfortably tight around the thigh, and the elastic supporting-strap g is secured to the waistband t' or the like. With this arrangement, it is to be observed, the thigh that is Without the bandage will in the operation of walking or similar movements rub against the smooth and soft sheetrubber ct, thereby avoiding chafing of the thighs. The sheet -rubber a being elastic will not uncomfortably bind the leg around which it is fitted, while the inelastic strips b b on the outer side operate to prevent the bandage from slipping around. The arrangement of elastic supporting-strap g, ring f, and strap 6, while it securely supports the bandage without the necessity of tightening the latter to too great an extent around the leg, has a draw or pull from the rearward slightly to the front, but at the same time allows perfect freedom of movement of the body with respect to the bandaged leg. If desired, two antichafing devices may be used-one on each leg-instead of but one, as herein illustrated; but I have found that one alone will give very good results.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a device to prevent the thighs of persons from chafing, one of such devices being provided with two inelastic shields of hard rubber hinged together and which inclose the scrotum and are interposed between the latter and the thighs and another of such devices being provided with shields, also inelastic, and interposed between the thighs and not directlyconnected to the same. I therefore do not claim such constructions; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An antichafing device adapted to be worn about a persons thigh, comprising a bandage consisting of a strip of soft non-porous elastic material; two substantially inelastic fabric strips each of which has one edge secured to an end of said elastic strip; an adjustable connection between the free edges of said inelastic fabric strips; and supporting-straps for said bandage.
2. An antichafing device, comprising a bandage formed of a strip of sheet-rubber, two fabric strips each of which has one edge permanently secured to an end of said rubber strip and provided in its other edge with eyelets, and a lacing threaded through said eyelets, the said bandage being adapted to be fastened around the upper portion of a persons thigh with the rubber strip adjacent the other thigh; a strap, e, having both ends secured to the upper edge of one of said fabric strips; a ring loose on said strap, e; and a supporting-strap having one end secured to Salk; and provided at its other end with a detachable fastening device, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SARAH E. L. \VILSON.
