Description

No. 675,108. Patented May 28, mm. G. EQPEBKINS.
NAPKIN HOLDER.
(Application filed Mar. 20, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. PERKINS, OF ATKINSON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ISAAC T. IVEEKLEY AND FREDERICK BESSANT, OF SAME PLACE.
NAPKlN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,108, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed March 20, 1 8 9 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atkinson, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin Supports or Holders andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to napkin supports or holders, more especially to that kind designed to support the napkin or a bib in front of a person during meal-times.
It has for its object to provide a support which is adjustable in length or size, so as to adapt it for use on a child or on an adult, and so that it can be accommodated to the size best suited for the person using the same.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists, primarily, of two members slidably or adjustably connected together, so as to lengthen or shorten the support, said members being shaped to fit around the neck and being formed of suitable elastic material, so that the same may be distended in fitting it around the neck, whereupon it will adjust itself by reason of the elasticity of the material, so as to fit easily about the neck and at the same time extend crosswise the napkin or bib, the ends of the members being provided with suitable means for gripping or holding the bib or napkin, as hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be specifically defined by the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a view showing the manner of applying the support or holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the support or holder. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of the supporter.
In the accompanying drawings the numerals 1 represent two members, which are connected together in such manner that one memher will slide upon the other, so that the sup- Serial No. 709,830. (No model.)
port formed of such members may be lengthened or shortened as the conditions may require. One manner of connecting the members together is by forming loops 2, one upon the inner end of each member, so that one member may pass through the loop attached to the other member, thus forming a slidin connection between the two members, so by moving one member upon the 0th support can be lengthened or shortene the friction between the members and the loops being sufficient to hold the members in their adjustment. The lower or outer ends of the members will be provided each with suitable means for gripping or holding the bib or napkin. The preferred means consists of the clasps 3, one secured to the lower end of each member.
The members may be made of some suitable metal possessing elasticity or some other material possessing elasticity and adapted to retain the shape given to the same-for instance, of rubber or celluloid or other material. I prefer to make this support of material which will retain the shape given to it, so that it may be formed into a circular portion 4, adapted to fit around the neck, and with extended ends 5, adapted to lie in front of the neck, said ends extending approximately tangent to the curved portion. By forming the members of material possessing elasticity the support can be spread or opened for the purpose of fastening it around the neck, and when placed about the neck the elasticity of the material will cause the support to adjust itself neatly about the neck without discomfort to the wearer and without liability to slip about theneck and will spread out the napkin across the breast by the ends of the Support springing outward.
I have illustrated and described what I consider to be the preferred details of construction of the parts of the support or holder; but I do not restrict myself to such details, as it is obvious that changes can be made and certain essential features of my invention still be employed.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is The napkin-support consisting of the extensible resilient members arranged to slide one upon the other, one of said members overlying the other and both having a portion extending forward of the overlying portions, the overlying portions being correspondingly curved and the extended portions being approximately tangent to the curved double portions and provided at their ends with devices for holding a napkin at opposite points, whereby the tangent portions will extend in 10 a forward direction from the neck and when moved one toward the other and released will spring so as to spread and hold the napkin across the breast, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. E. PERKINS.
