4PACKING-HIRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,879, dated December 18, 1900. Appiimion ma December 23,1899. serial no. 741,401. (No maar) To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER E. GALLUP, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Sewickley, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Rings, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in packing-rings for pipe-joints and for other purposes, and has for its object a construction whereby the closing of a joint is effected by the moving apart of the sides of the ring without any diminution of the dimensions of the ring in other directions.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a pipe-coupling having my improved packing-ring applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the packing-ring.
In the practice of my invention the ring is formed of india-rubber or other yielding resilient material and is made of a transverse shape corresponding to the shape of the recess or pocket in which the ring is to be usedas, for example, in the construction of pipecoupling shown in the drawings the recesses for the reception of the packing-rings are approximately V-shaped and the ring is therefore of a similar vshape in cross-section. The side of the ring against which the followerring or expanding device operates is formed with a recess 2 for the reception of a rib or projection4 3 on the follower-ring 4 or eX- pander. This projection or rib is preferably made conical in cross-section, so that on entering the recess 2 in the packing-ring it will press the lips 5 outward against the sides of the recess or pocket in which the ring is placed.
It will be observed that this outward movement of the lips 5, which corresponds to the lateral enlargement of the ordinary form of packing, is not effected by a compression of the body of the ring and consequent reduction of its size in the line of such compressive action.
It will be observed that the follower-ring not only spreads the lips outwardly, but also forces the ring bodily into the recess, so that its sides for their entire length bear closely against the walls of the recess or pocket.
It will be observed that the lips when eX- panded by the rib or projection 3 form `wedges between the sides of the projection or rib and the sides of the pocket, and hence any outward movement of the pipe-sections or other article against which the packing-ring is pressed will cause the lips to be more Iirmly wedged in place, and thereby hold the pipe or other article as against such outward movement.
I claim herein as my inventionl. As a new article of manufacture,a wedgeshaped packing-ring formed of india-rubber and having an annular V-shaped recess in its rear face, substantially as set forth.
2. As a means for packing joints, an indiarubber packing-ring having a transverse contour corresponding to the contour of the pocket or recess inwhich the ring is to be fitted, and provided with an annular V-shaped recess in its rear wall and a follower-ring having an annular conically-shaped rib or projection, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set.
my hand.
ELMER E. GALIJUP.
