TO ALL WHOM. IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY CHENELiof Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammers; and I do hereby declare thntthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enahlethose skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is e side view of' my improved hammer.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of this same, the plane of section being indicated by the line a: w, fig. 1.
Similar letters Aof reference indicate ,corresponding parts.
This invention relates to afnew manner of forming the sockets of wroughtjiron hammers, and `consists in making the same of malleable iron, and brazing, soldering, or otherwise securingrit to the head.
Hammers are generally made of cast iron, but wrought-iron hammers nre far superior, and in greater demand than any other kind. But it is not only very difficult to form thesocket on a wrought-iron hammer, but also to lnd sound enough iron to form the socket on. v
My invention is designed to overcome all these diicultics, and to provide a. hammer which combines the strength and durability of a wrought-iron hammer with the facility of construction of a cast-iron hummer.
A represents the head of a hammer mede of wrought ir'on of the usual shape. B is the sookencast of malleable iron, in the usual shape, and provided with tapering tips Aor flanges, a a, which t into corresponding recesses in the head A, as shown in fig. 2. The socket is brezcd, soldered, riveted, or otherwise secured tothe head. The face and claws of the hammer may be made of steel, and the most improved kind oi hammer can thus be made at the lenstpossible expense. The handle() of the hammer is made in the usual manner, and secured in the ordinary style.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim nsnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe cast-iron socket B with the wrought-iron head A, both made andconnected substantially in the manner and for the purposes'set forth.
HENRY CHENEY.
