Description
No. 651,306 Patented June 5, I900.
C. GABRIEL STAY BOLT. WRENCH.
Application filed Sept. 18,1899.) (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
CHARLES GABRIEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STAY-BOLT WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,306, dated June 5, 1900. Application filed September 18, 1899. Serial No. 730,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GABRIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay Bolt Grippers or Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in awrench or a device for gripping staybolts for boilers to rapidly insert the latter, the object being toprovide a device of this character which will grip stay-bolts without the necessity of providing a square end therefor and which can be mounted in a pneu matic tool, so as to be operated rapidly; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
. moved. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the grippers at the inner limits of their movement. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of my device on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
My device consists of two parallel circular plates A and B, secured together and held a given distance apart by means of bolts C, the middle portions of which are larger than the ends to form shoulders for said plates A and B to rest upon. Said bolts 0 likewise serve as pivots for grippers D, each of which con sists of a segmental gear extended at one side to form a cam E, having a curved serrated face F eccentric tosaid bolt and a flat face G. Said segmental gears are adapted to intermesh with gear-teeth H, arranged in sets corresponding in number and relative position with said grippers D and forming an'integral part of a nut I, mounted between said plates A and B and pivotally movable thereon, said nut having annular shoulders J, adapted to engage the edges of said plates A and B. Said plate Ais provided with a central opening K, into which the end of the staybolt or other device to be gripped is adapted to be inserted, and said plate B is provided with a similar screw-threaded opening to receive a shank or handle L, said last-named opening being surrounded by an annular flange M. Said shank or handle L may have any desired form.
The operation of my device is very simple. The end of the stay-bolt or other device to be grippedis inserted through said opening K, the grippers D being in the position shown in Fig. 1. The nut I isthen turned to turn said grippers D toward the inner limits of their movement and into engagement with said stay-bolt, thereby gripping the same. The nut I is then released and the entire device turned by means of the shank or handle L, said grippers being adapted to grip more firmly the greater the resistance. The entire strain is borne by bolts 0, said nut I serving only to adjust the grippers to throw same into engagement or release them.
I claim as my invention- 1. A wrench comprising a rigid member, a plurality of grippers pivotally mounted thereon, and a revoluble member mounted on said rigid member and engaging said grippers, whereby when said revoluble member is turned relatively to said rigid member said grippers are likewise turned and thrown into or out of engagement with the device to be clutched rigid with said rigid member.
2. Awrench, comprising a rigid member, a plurality of grippers pivotally mounted there on and provided with teeth on one edge, and a member movable on said rigid member and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth on said grippers to turn the latter and throw them into and out of engagement with the device to be clutched rigid with said rigid member.
3. A wrench comprising two parallel rigid members, a plurality of grippers pivotally mounted between the same, a member movable between said rigid members and adapted to engage said grippers to turn the same and 'throw them into and out of engagement with the. device to be clutched, and a central opening in one of said rigid members for the admission of the device to be clutched.
4. Awrench comprising two parallel members rigidly connected with each other by means of bolts, a gripper pivotally mounted on each of said bolts between said members, a segmental gear on each of said grippers, a
nut movable between said members, teeth on said nut adapted to intermesh with said segmental gears on said grippers to turn the latter to throw same into and out of engagement with the device to be clutched, and a central opening in one of said members for the admission of the device to be clutched.
5. Awrench comprising two parallel members rigidly connected with each other by means of bolts a gripper pivotally mounted on each of' said bolts between said members, a segmental gear on each of said grippers, a
curved serrated face on each of said grippers eccentric to the pivot thereof, a nut movable between said members, teeth on said nut adapted to intermesh with said segmental gears on said grippers to turn the latter to throw same into and out of engagement with the device to be clutched, and acentral opening in one of said members for the admission of'the device to be clutched.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES GABRIEL.
