NIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLEN HARRIS OVER'ION, OF'FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY.
FOLDlNG BOX..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,939, dated August 14, 1900.
Application filed May 21, 1900; Serial No. 17,415. (No model.)
In all whom it'mrty concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN HARRIS OVER- ToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Franklin and State ofKentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to what are termed knockdown boxes-that is, boxes consisting of sheets or strips so cut and slit that they maybe folded up to form a box or box portions and may also be folded down flat; and my invention consists of a knockdown box having two sections, one adapted to enter the other, with means for securing said sections in relatively-different positions, so as to enlarge or decrease-the capacity of the box as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved boxes open; Fig. 2, a plan view showing the mode in which the two box-blanks are slit and scored.
The box consists of two sections A 13, each made from an oblong sheet orblank of paper or cardboard and each scored along lines 0, parallel to each other and to the side edges, and along lines I) 11, parallel. to eachother and to the ends of the strips or sections. Each section is also slit with a right-angled slit a, one portion of which coincides with the line b and another portion with the line 0. As thus scored and cut the portions 2 2 of each blank may be turned up on the line cto form the sides of one section of the box, and the portions 7 7 may be turned inward to form the end, and the portion 6 may be folded up against the outside of the portions 7 7,- and the portion may be folded over, forming a; cover, the pontions 4 '4, being bent inward, forming side flaps of the top lying against the upturned portions 2 2 on the outside thereof. By this means there is formed two box-sections, each of which has sides and one end and is open at the other end, and the open end of one section is adapted to enter the open end of the other section, as shown in Fig. 1. By moving one section farther into or out of the other section the length of the box may bejncreased or decreased and suitable means may be employed for connecting the two sections together when theyare properly adjusted. After being thus secured the single slot 61 in the corresponding side of theother section, or there may be one tongue on each side 2 and a plurality of slots (7 in the other section, as shown.
' lVhatever may be the arrangement the end of the section 13 may be placed in that of the section A in any desired position and the tongues of one section inserted in the slits of the other, so as to secure the same in place.
The inturn-ed ends 7 may secured to the section 6 by providing these ends with slots g and the section 6 with tongues i, adaptedto enter the same, or the tongues may be upon the section 7 and the slots in the section 6.
In order to hold down the cover portion, each of the side flaps at 4 of the cover part 5 may have a tongue 6, adapted to enter a slit y in one of the sides 2.
. Without limiting myselfto the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, I claim as myinvention- 1. A knockdown box consisting of two sections slidableone upon the other, each with two sides a bottom and one open end, and a foldable bottom extension constituting an end and a cover, and means for connecting the sections together in different relative positions, substantially as set forth.
2. A knockdown box consisting of two knockdown sections having open ends one fitting in the other, and with tongues and slitsiwhereby the two may be secured together in different positions, substantiallyas set forth.
3. A knockdown box consisting of two knockdown sections having open ends one fitting in the other, 'and with tongues and slits arranged to engage with the sections in different relative positions, substantially as set forth,
4. A knockdown box consisting oftwo knockdown sections having open ends one fitting in the other, and. with tongues on one and a plurality of slits in the other whereby to secure the two together in different po'si-' tions, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in an extensible box,
1 of twosectionseach with sides and one end and open at the other end, tongues on one section and slits in the other arranged to engage with the sections in different relative positions, substantially as set forth. Y
6. The combination in an extensible box, of ,two's ections slidable one upon the other and each having a bottom and two sides and flaps on the sides at one end for turning inward to close one .end of the section, and an ezitensionof the bottom portion having asection adapted to be bent upward against the tension of the bottom portion having a sec tion adapted to be bent upward against the said flaps, with tongues and slits for connecting the bent-up section with the flaps, and a terminal section of the bottom extension having side flaps and foldable to form a cover,
and means for connecting the sections together in different relative stantially as set forth.
8. The combination in an extensible box, of two sections 'slidable one upon the other and each having a bottom and two sides and flaps on the sides at one end for turning inward, toclose one end of the section, an extension of the bottom portion having a sec.- tion adapted'to be bent upward againstthe said flaps, with tongues and slits for connecting the bent-up section with the flaps, and a terminal section of the bottom extension foldable to form a cover and having side flaps, each with a tongue adapted to a slit in one of the sides of the box, and means for connecting the two sections together, substantially as set forth.
In'testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specificati'onin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
