CUFF- BUTTO N.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 645,307, dated March 13, 1900.
Application filed December 13, 1899. Serial No- 740,165. (No model.)
- To all whrmt fl; nw l concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cufi-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in buttons used to secure the cuffs of shirts.
In the class of cuff-buttons in which two heads are rigidly secured to the opposite ends of a bar the heads are liable to move on the cuffs and mar the surfaces of the same.
The object of this invention is to secure a firmer hold of the cuff-buttons in the buttonholes.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction whereby the connectinglink secured to the center of the heads extends in the buttonhole nearly to the edges of the heads, as will be more fully set forth here inafter.
Figure 1 is a side view of a cuff-button the heads of which are secured obliquely to my improved connecting-link. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the inside of one of the heads, showing the connecting-link partly in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of my improved cuff-button and the cuff, showing-the relative positions of the same.
In the drawings, ct a indicate the cuffs; c (1., the buttonholes in the cuffs; b b, the heads, which are preferably placed obliquely to each other, so as to bear on the outside surfaces of the cufis; c, the connecting-link, formed, preferably, of flat sheet metal; 0' c, extensions on the opposite ends of the link, and c 0 posts extending beyond the ends 0 of the link. The posts 0 c are secured usually by solder to the inner surfaces of the heads I) b at or about the center of the same.
The bar forming the link 0 is preferably curved, as shown in the drawings. The forward edge of the link 0 is within the forward edge I) b of the head, so that when in place the forward edge of the head may cover the end of the butt-onhole. The inclined ends 0 c of the link are on a line with the annular edges of the inner sides of the heads. The extensions 0 0 project through the buttonholes and have curved edges connecting with the rear edge of the linkbar.
The flat link 0, with the extensions 0 0' extending through the buttonholes, serves to support the heads and hold them against moving in the cuffs, while the posts 0 0 secured centrally to the heads, resist the strain on the heads and prevent the same from spreading outward, which they are liable to do when the link-bar is secured near the forward ends of the heads, as heretofore constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cud-button, the combination with the heads, of a flat link-bar extending from near the forward end of one head to near the forward end of the other head and provided with an extension having a post centrally secured to the heads, whereby the strain on the heads is resisted by the cen trally-secured link, as described.
2. In a cuff-button, the combination with the heads I) b, of the link 0, the extensions 0' c on the ends of the link, and the projecting posts 0 c on the extensions; whereby the obliquely-placed heads are secured together at or near their center, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. ALLEN.
