EDWARD TIIOS. I-IANNAM AND JOHN A. BECl-ITEL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEAM-G EN ERATQR.
SPEUIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,090, dated March 13, 1900. Application filed November 10, 1899. Serial No. 736,458. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, EDWARD THOS. HAN- NAM and JOHN A. BECHTEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
The desirability of endowingsteam-generators with greater steam-generating capacity in proportion to their size and fuel consumption is obvious. There is also a well-recognized demand for efiective means of increasin g the efficiency of steam-generators already in use Without reconstruction, increase of space, increase of stack, increase of fuel consumption, or materialloss of time. It is the object of our invention to accomplish these results; and our invention consists in novel means for increasing. the boiler circulation, novel means for increasing the heating-surface and the heating efficiency, novel means for supporting the boiler dead-plate, novel arrangements for cleaning the parts, and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of a parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l'is .a longitudinal section of a steam-generator embodying our invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged rear View corresponding to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a partial longitudinal section of a steam-generator equipped with a modified form of our invention.
Arranged in the combustion-chamber A is a series of upwardly-extending water-tubes l3, communicating at their lower ends with manifold O and at their upper ends with manifold D. The manifold C is provided with a pipe 0, which taps the boiler E at a point near its bottoma little to one side. The manifold D is provided with tubes d, tapping the boiler at a level considerably higher than the pipe 0, and at points directly opposite the openings of tubes B and d with removable plugs d and d respectively, which allow ready access for cleaning the tubes. The tubes cl furnish a convenient supportfor a fire-brick or equivalent dead-head F, thus obviating the use of iron plates, which are quickly burned out and must be often renewed. The manifold D is mounted upon the top of the rear wall of the combustion chamber, with plugs d and d exposed so as to allow ready access for'cleaning, for which purpose the upper surface of the wall is beveled at a. Both manifolds are provided with removable ends 0 and 01 for cleaning purposes, and the lower one, C, with a blow-off c for frequent removal of deposits.
Owing to the preferred location of the tubes 13 in the area or belt where the flames and heated gases from the grate are drawn around the end of the boiler a portion of these heated products cross and recross the tubes, while another portion lick along a considerable portion of their length, thus affording a very thorough contact of the flames,&c. with the tubes,
and owing to the great pitchwhich is obtainable through this location of the tubes a very rapid circulation of boiler-water through them is obtained, and consequently a correspondingly large absorption of the heat from the products of combustion.
In the foregoing we have described a preferred form of arrangement, but this may be modified almost indefinitely Without departing from the spirit of our invention-for instance, with those boilers already provided with a mud-drum the mud-drum may be very conveniently used in place of the lower manifold O. This arrangementis indicated in Fig. 3, wherein 0 represents the mud-drum and c the pipe connecting it with the lower part of the boiler, the other parts being the same as before. Furthermore, the number, arrangement, and pitch of tubes B may be varied to suit the results desired. Thus the pitch may be varied from a vertical position to any desired pitch, but it is thought that the pitch illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 will prove most satisfactory for general conditions of use.
l/Ve claim as'our invention 1. The combination in a steam-generator, of a series of water-tubes inclinedupwardly and rearwardly through the curved belt assumed by the products of combustion at the rear of the boiler; a connection between the tubes and a low point of the boiler; and one or more connections between the tubes and a high point of the boiler whereby water is taken from a low part of the boiler and discharged into a higher part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a steam-generator,
IOO
of a series of water-tubes arranged in the combustion-chamber and inclined upward from a position beneath the boiler to a position in the rear of the boiler; a connection between the tubes and a low point of the boiler; and one or more connections between the tubes and a high point of the boiler whereby water is taken froma low part of the boiler and discharged into a higher part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination in a steam-generator, of aseries of upwardly-extending water-tubes arranged in the combustion-chamber; a connection between the tubes and alow point of the boiler; one or more connections between the tubes and a high point of the boiler whereby water is taken from a low part of the boiler and discharged into a higher part; and a boiler dead-plate supported by the watertubes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination in a steam-generator, of a water-drum in the combustion-chamber below the boiler; a water-drum higher in the combustion-chamber; a series of water-tubes connecting the drums; a connection between the lower drum and alow point in the boiler; and pipes connecting the upper drum and a higher point in the boiler; and a boiler deadplate supported by the pipes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination in a steam-generator, of a water-drum in the combustion-chamber below the boiler; a water-drum in a higher part of the combustion-chamber; a series of water-tubes connecting the drums; a connection between, the lower drum and a low point in the boiler; one or more connections between the upper drum and a higher point in the boiler whereby water is taken from the lower part of the boiler and discharged into a higher part; and one or more openings in the upper drum through which the tubes and pipes connected therewith may be cleaned, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination in a steam-generator,
of a water-drum in the lower part of the combustion-chamber and connected with a low point of the boiler; a water-drum in a higher part of the combustion-chamber; a series of straight water-tubes connecting the drums; one or more pipes connecting the upper drum with a high point of the boiler; and one or more openings in the upper drum through which the pipes connected therewith may be cleaned, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination in a steam-generator, of a water-drum in the combustion-chamber below and connected with a low point of the boiler; a water-drum in a higher part of the combustion-chamber in the rear of the boiler; a series of straight water-tubes connecting the drums and passing through the curved belt of products of combustion at the rear of the boiler; one or more pipes connecting the upper drum with a high point of the boiler; and one or more openings in the upper drum through which the pipes connected therewith may be cleaned, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination in a steam-generator, of'a water-drum in the combustion-chamber below and connected with a low point of the boiler; a water-drum located at the top of the rear wall and partially outside of the combustion-chamber; a series of straight watertubes connecting the drums and passing through the curved belt of products of combustion at the rear of the boiler; one or more pipes connecting the upper drum with a high point of the boiler; a dead-plate supported by the pipes connecting the upper drum with the boiler; and one or-more openings in the exposed portions of the upperdrum whereby the pipes connected therewith may be cleaned, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
