UMBRELLA-HOLDER FOR VEHICLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL CLAUS Fnrnnnaicn TARDEL, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Pinneberg, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Fixing Umbrellas and the Like to Cycles and other Vehicles, (for. which I have applied for patents in France, February 12, 1898, No. 264,667, and in England, April13, 189$,No. 8,620,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to apparatus for fixing an umbrella or the like to a cycle or other vehicle in any required position.

The chief advantages of this apparatus as compared with others of a similar kind are its lightness and convenience of manipulation.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial plan of same; Fig. 3, a part of same, shown separately; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the upper end portion of the apparatus or umbrella-support.

As shown in Fig." 1, an easily tightened and loosened socket or clamp 17 is fitted on a supporting-rod a, secured to some suitable part of the vehicle. In a tube 0, formed with or connected to the clamp 19, is guided a supporting-rod e, which can be fixed in any required position radially or vertically by means of the clamping-screw d and is bent or cranked, as shown, so that by axially turning the rod in the tube 0 the position of the umbrella, supported at the upper end of the rod, as hereinafter explained, can be shifted to either side, to the front, or to the rear relative to the person on the cycle. At the upper end of the supporting-rod e is pivoted a clamping piece or holder f, Figs. 1 and 3, which can be adjusted to any required angle by turning the worm g, gearing into a worm-sector on the piece f by means of its thumb-piece or handle. The worm g is journaled between the cheekpieces 9 g of a head g secured to the upper end of the cranked rod 6, and the worm-sector f, forminga part of the holder f, is j ournaled between and to the cheek-pieces and meshes with the worm, so that without unloosening any part or parts of the apparatus the angle of inclination of the umbrella handle or stick can be varied by simply turning the thumbpiece 9 A screw it, provided with a milled head, serves in concert with the spring clampingcheeks i to hold the object to be carried, such as an umbrella or the like.

If, for example, an umbrella is to be carried on a cycle, the socket or clampb is fixed to the supporting-rod a and the arm e in its tube 0 at the required height. The umbrella is held normally in a closed condition by means of the screw h and cheeks t', and the clamping-piece f, with the umbrella fixed to it, is adjusted by turning the screw g into the direction in which it can be most conveniently carried. When rain, sunshine, or wind occurs, the umbrella is opened and brought,

by turning the cranked rod 8 and adjusting the clamping piece f, into the position in which it will protect the rider, and the parts are then clamped in that position.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is-

1. An umbrella-support, consisting of a holder having a worm-sector at one side and means at the opposite side for holding an um= brella handle or stick, a vertical, crankshaped rod having a head at its upper end to which said worm-sector is journaled, a rotatable worm mounted in the head and engaging the worm-sector, a clamp constructed to engage a support and having a tube in which the lower end of the vertical, crank-shaped rod can be turned axially to shift the umbrella laterally in either direction, and a device for holding the rod stationary in the tube, substantially as described.

2. An umbrella support, consisting of a holder having a worm sector and spring clamping-cheeks to hold the umbrella handle or stick, a vertical, crank-shaped rod having a head at its upper end provided with cheekpieces between and to which the worm-sector is j ournaled, a worm journaled in said head, engaging the worm sector and having a thumb-piece, a clamp havinga tube in which the lower end of the crank-shaped rod is vertically adjustable and can be axially turned, and a device for holding the rod in said tube, substantially as described.
