TO ALL WHOM IT MAYOONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GLASS, of Ri'chland, in the county of Rush, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn Huskers, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference 'marked thereon, making a part of this specification My invention consists in the construction of a simple device for the protection of the thumb and hand in husking corn.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a narrow metal strip with a bow at the rear end, which of itself forms a spring. Pivoted to the end of the bow is a similar strip, 13, of the same width of the strip A. The outer end of this bar B or strip is curved slightly, as shown, having its extreme end sharpened and extending upwards or towards the small bar D, which is hinged at a to the end of the strip A. The end of the bar D is formed into a hook, 3 and sharpened also to correspond with the end of bar 13. Upon the bar D is a curved plate, m, for the insertion of the thumb, and is covered by a strip of'leather, g, or other material, to shield the thumb and secure it in plate. d represents a similar piece of leather atthe under side of the bar B, for the insertion of the fingers, while there is a metallic rest, 0, at the rear of said leather for the small finger of the hand. This device is placed between the thumb and fingers of the hand, with the thumb within the band m, and fingers through the leather (Z, under the bar B. The corn is grasped between the hook y and the sharp end of the bar 13, and effectually stripped of its husk. After the parts are pressed together the spring throws them apart and ready for a new operation, the plate B readily turning upon its pivot 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's
The bars A B, constructed as described, and provided with the hook D and rest 0, with plate in, leather g, and loop d, when constructed and used as and for the purposes herein fully set forth.
Iii testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my handand seal this 13th day of December, 1866.
