PlCTURE-MATTING CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611 ,238, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed October 1,- 1897. Serial No. 654,057. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, P ILLIPP DRINKAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Matting Gutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of my invention to obtain a device by means of which the mats employed in framing pictures may be rapidly cut to any desired shape or size and which is adapted at the same time to form aborder-lining surrounding the opening cut in the mat.
The invention consists in the peculiar con struction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my matting-cutter as in use. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a section of a mat cut with my machine. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the cutter and marker. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line was, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the knife and holder detached.
A is a suitable base-board on which the matting may be laid.
B is a rod extending longitudinally above the board A and supported at its opposite,
ends by the brackets O.
D is a knife holder or carriage slidingly secured upon the rod B and preferably comprising the bearing a, connectedby the yoke or handle Z) and having the oppositely-extending arm 0, at the end of which the knife or cutter d is carried. This knife is preferably secured to the holder by means of the clamping-plate e and screw f and is adapted to be adjusted rotatorily to set the knife at any desired angle to the base.
E are markers secured to the holder D beyond the knife d and adapted to trace lines parallel to the line of cut. These markers are secured to a plate or head F, which is adjustably secured to the holder D, so that the markers may be raised out of engagement with the mat when not in use. The markers are preferably formed of pointed screws passing through the plate F and arranged in pairs construction is to enable me to mark mar ginal lines extending completely around the central opening in the mat, and where this opening is rectangular the lines traced by the markers must necessarily extend as far beyond each end of the cut as the space between said out and line.
G isv a presser-bar for holding the matting down upon the base A While being cut. This bar is preferably secured to the rod B by the links H, which are hinged to said rod, thus permitting the bar G to swing vertically. The bar G is also slidingly secured to the knife carriage D, preferably by passing through the slotted bearing g beneath the arm 0, which permits of a slight vertical play of said arm in relation to the presser-bar.
I is a guide or stop extending across the base near one end thereof and at right angles to the rod B and presser-bar G.
J is an adjustable sleeve or stop on the rod B, and J and J are stops laterally adjustable upon the stop I.
Both the stop I and the rod B are preferably scaled, and the carriage D is provided with an indicating-pointer K, extending into proximity to the scale on the rod.
In practice the operator places the mattingstock upon the base-board with one edge against the stop I. If desired, the knife d may be set perpendicular to the board and the matting may be cut to the proper outside dimensions to fit the picture-frame; but I preferably leave the knife at whatever angle it may be set, as it is immaterial at what angle this outside cut is made.
In cutting the central opening, the knife d being set at the proper angle to obtain the desired bevel to the edge of the opening, the stops J, J, and J 2 are then placed in the proper position on the rod 13 to secure the desired length of cut and hold the matting as set in proper position on the baseboard, all of which maybe readily and accurately accomplished by the assistance of the scales on the rod B and stop I.
The matting will be held down in its adjusted position by the presser-bar G, which rests therein. The operator now takes hold of the knife-holder by means of a handle L at the outer end of the arm 0 and presses the point of the knife through the matting, the play of the bar G in the slotted bearingg permitting of this movement of the knife, while the presser-bar is stationary. This downward movement of the holder also presses the markers against the matting and the hearing g against the presser-loar. The holder or carriage is then drawn along the guide-bar 13 until it strikes against the stop J. The knife and presser-bar are then lifted and the mat turned to bring another side in proper position for cutting and marking, and the operation is repeated until the sides are finished.
If desired, a spring h may be placed in the slotted bearing 9, bearing against the presserbar and holding the knife normally in its raised position.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a base on which the matting or material to be cut may be laid, a guide-rod extending above the base and parallel thereto, and a knife-carriage slidingly secured thereon, of a presser-bar parallel to said guide-rod and a bearing on said knifecarriage adapted to slide upon said presser-bar and hold it against the Work while the cut is being made.
. 2. The combination With a base on which the matting or material to be cut is laid, and a guide-rod extending above the base, parallel thereto, of a presser-bar parallel to said guiderod and a knife-carriage having a rotary and a sliding engagement with said guide-rod and slidingly secured to said presser-bar so as to have a limited vertical play thereon, permitting the bar to rest on the work While the knife is inserted therethrough and the carriage to then bear on said presser-bar while the cut is being made.
3. In a matting-machine, the combination with the traveling knife-holder, of a marker secured to said holder, having a bearing on the matting in a line parallel to the line of cut in front and rear of the knife and adapted to make a parallel border marking simultaneously to the making of the cut, but extending beyond said out at each end.
4. In a matting-machine, the combination with the traveling knife-holder, of a marker secured to said holder having a bearing on the matting-stock in front and rear of the knife in a line parallel to the line of cut, and adapted to make a border-marking parallel to the cut and extending beyond the same at each end a distance equal to the space between said cut and marking.
5. In a matting-machine, the combination with a base and knife-carriage, of a scaled rod above the base on which said carriage is adapted to travel, a scaled stop-rod secured to the base at right angles to said rod and the adjustable stops J, J and J 2 respectively secured to said rod and stop-rod.
