Description
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE ILAIIGES FOR PBIVY VBOWLS.
ROBERT DIVEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.' Letters Patent No. 60,153, dated December 4, 1866.
SPCIFICA'IION- 'ro ALL wHoM IT MAY ooNoEaN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DIVEN, of the city of Brooklymin the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closet Hoppers; and I do hereby declare that the` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, U
following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is 4a vertical transverse section.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing a part of the invention.
Figure 3 is a plan view of another part thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Y This invention consists in a novelcombination with a water-closet hopperrof a detached iiange for securing` `the hopper to the floor, whereby the said hopper can be easily and conveniently removed for repairs or other purposes, andwhereby the hoppers will occupy much less space when packedv in quantities for vtransportation than those hitherto constructed with permanently attached lianges, inasmuchas the hoppers and ilanges maybe 'separately packed and transported.
ATo enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it, with reference to the drawings.
Als a water-closet hopper, the upper portion of which is made daring or bowl shaped, in the usual or any suitable manner, and the lower part or neck of which is tubular in form, as show-n more clearly at a in iig. 1. Formed around the exterior of the hopper, at the upper end of this tubulanneck, is an annular shoulder 6,;
which rests upon the detached flange B when the hopper is fixed in place upon the floor, as will be presently more fully explained. The exterior of the neck, a, is cylindrical in form, except that it has formedfupon it three or more lugs or ears C, the upper ends of which form shoulders, c, opposite andV below the shoulder '6. The distance between the said lugs is equal toror slightly exceeds the width thereof, in order to allowthe hopper A to be placed upon the ilange B, fixed to thei'loor 1), as will presently appear. The detached flange B, a plan of which is shown separately in iig. 3, is secured in a horizontal position to the floor D, and over a suitable hole, m, therein, as represented in lig. 1, by nails, screws, or any other suitable means, and has o'. hole, d, in its centre, which corresponds in shape with the exterior of the neck a, with its lugs C, in` such manner that the said neck being thrust downward and through the said hole d in the flange, the lugs C will pass through the recesses e and the inwardly projecting. spurs f, will pass between the lugs C on the said neck fa; l'l'.he shoulder b of the hopper A being thus brought do'wn against the Vflange B, the hopper is turned `around until the lugs C are brought underneath Vthe inwardly projecting spurs f of the Hangs, so thatl the saidspurs f are i situated between the shoulders c oi' the lugs O and the shoulder b at the upper end of the neck a, and thus hold the hopper A securely in position, at the same time that it may be easily removed when desired to `be i cleaned, or for other purposes, by simply turning the hopper A around until'the lugs C are ,brought opposite and underneath the recesses e in the llange, and then pulling the hopper upwards, the lugs` passing through the said recesses. By these means the hopper'may be conveniently and quickly secured in placeupon the ioor, and y readily removed therefrom when required. Furthermore, the flanges being removed from the .hopper-s, the said hoppers may be packed in nests" for transportation, thus greatly reducing the space ordinarily required for packing the hoppers, the anges, in this case, being packed separately. It should be mentioned that the upper surface or shoulders c of the lugs O may be made somewhat inclined or spiral, in such manner. that when thei spurs f are placed between the shoulders c and the annularl shoulder b, as just set forth, they will be forced" snugly up against the said shoulder b, and thus have a rni bearing upon the same. The ange b, instead of being made entirely separate, may bev separate onlyfrom the bodyl of the hopper, represented above it in the. drawing, and be cast with the neck; and in such case the spurs j' f will protrude ,inwardly beyond the interior of thc neck.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s- The water-closet hopper, constructed with a detached liange B, substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specied, as a new article of manufacture.
ROBERT DIVEN.
