TAILoRs SHEARS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,008, dated January 9, 1849.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. WAR- NER, of the city of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Constructing Shears for Cutting Cloth or Other Substances Usually Out by Means of Shears; and I do declare the following to be a true and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching the lower blade of the shear to a bar and making it work incombination with the upper blade by means of a short arm or lever worked by the upper hand lever as hereinafter described, by which arrangement the blades are made to act in cutting more nearly parallel to each other than those of the ordinary shears thus increasing the facility of their use by lessening the spread of the points, and keeping the lower part of the shears constantly in contact with the surface upon which the material is laid to be cut at the same time that the power of the hand is applied more equally over the whole blade than in any other plan hitherto in use. A drawing motion is also'given to the upper blade by this arrangement, which renders the cut more perfect and easier.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make the upper blade and the levers, worked by thehand, substantially as they have hitherto been made. The lower blade I make upon the end of a bar, represented by the annexed drawing (a, a,). I connect the lower blade and bar to the upper hand lever by means of a joint, represented by the annexed drawing at This joint should be placed at la convenient distance from the pivot; for an ordinary tailors 'shears say at the distance of an inch and an lmaterial to be cut.
In order to securezthe blade in a xed po sition, as well as to enable it to have a forward and backward motion such as would be given .by the action of the lever I provide the end of the bar farthest from the blade with a slot seen at (o) of the drawing i referred to, through this slot I pass a screw into the rim of the lower lever, allowing a .j play between the head of the screw and the slot sufficient to allow the requisite motion of the bar. v i i Ihe accompanying drawing represents a tailors shears with my improvements.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l1. The construction of the lower bladeseparate'from the upper lever and lconnected with it-by a joint a above described.
2. I also claim the applicationof the bar to steady the vaction of the lower blade con` structed andoperating as herein described;
