UNITED STATES P TENT OFFICE.
ULYSSES S. PARISH AND FLAVEL A. RUDOLPH, OF CARMI, IIJIJINOIS.
HOLDER.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,702, dated July 19, 1898.
Application filed October 4, l 8 9 '7.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ULYSSES S. PARISH and FLAVEL A. RUDOLPH, of Oarmi, in the county of White and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Curtain-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to curtain-holders such as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 631,139, filed by us on April 7, 1897, and allowed July 15, 1897.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved curtain-holder arranged to securely look a' curtain in the desired position and prevent it from moving sidewise, especially in case the curtain is somewhat narrow and does not overlap the sides of the window-frame.-
The invention consists principally of a specially-constructed locking device for securely fastening the support for the curtain-roller frame to a depending rod.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isafront elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged trans- .verse section of the improvement on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
On the upper cross-bar of the window-frame A is secured a bracket B, in which. is secured the upper end of a depending rod 0, preferably made polygonal in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, the rod depending preferably at the middle of the window, at the inside thereof, as shown in Fig. 1.
On the rod 0 is fitted to slide vertically a support D for a laterally-adj ustable frame E, provided at its ends with downwardly-extending lugs, in which is journaled aroller F for the curtain F. The supportD consists principally of an L-shaped plate formed in its horizontal member with an opening D, corresponding in cross-section to the rod 0, so that the support is free to slide on the said rod and also free to be tilted slightly for the purpose hereinafter more fully explained.
Near the lower end of the dependin g or ver- Serial No. 653,953. (No model.)
tical arm D of the support D is formed an opening D for the passage of part of a lockingcatch G, formed at its inner end with an opening G, through which passes loosely the rod 0. The catch Gis provided with downwardlyextending lugs G fulcrumed on a pivot H, held in transversely-extending lugs D projecting from the vertical member D of the support D. The catch G is pressed on near its inner end by a spring I, coiled on the pivot II, and fastened with its other end 011 the member D of the support D.
The outer end of the catch G is connected with one end of a rope or cord .I, extending upwardly and passing over a pulley K, journaled in the outer end of the bracket B. The downwardly-extending end of the cord J is under the control of the operator for raising or lowering the curtain, as hereinafter more fully described.
The outer end of the catch G is formed with an offset G extending upwardly and adapted to abut against a lug D projecting forwardly from the member D so as to limit the upward-swingin g motion of the outer end of the catch G.
Now by the arrangement described it will be seen that the support -D engages the rod 0 at the horizontal member of the said sup port, and the second connection is made with the rod 0 by the catch G, pivoted on the lower end of the vertical member, so that when the cord J is slack the springl holds the catch G in a slightly-inclined position, so that the weight of the frame E and the curtainF on the support D causes a firm locking of the catch G on the rod G to securely hold the curtain F in place.
Now when it is desired to raise or lower the frame E, carrying the curtain roller F, the operator pulls on the downwardly-extending part of the cord J to swing the forward end of the catch G upward until its projection G abuts against the lug D and the said catch is moved into an approximately horizontal position or at right angles to the rod 0 to allow a free up and down sliding of the support D with the catch G on the rod 0.1 The'operator by further pulling on the end of the cord J can now readily raise the support "D and the parts supported thereby by slightly releasing the end of the cord J. The support D is then lowered, and when the desired position of the curtain is reached and when the open ator fully releases the cord J then the spring I immediately returns the catch G into an inclined position to clamp the rod 0 and to securely lock the support D again to the rod 0. The support D, as well as the catch G, is preferably made of sheet metal struck up to form the various parts, as described, so that the support and its catch can be very cheaply manufactured. The support and catch are very durable and not liable to get out of order.
The frame E is similar in construction to the one described in the application for Letters Patent referred tothat is, the frame is made of two members having longitudinal registering grooves for the passage of the bolts L, engaging lateral slots D formed in the horizontal member of the support D, to allow of adjusting the frame E laterally on the said support, the bolts when slack also permitting of sliding the members E E in a longitudinal direction,'either inward or outward, according to the width of the window-frame and the length of the curtain-roller.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a curtain-holder, the combination of a vertically-extending supported rod, a support slidable vertically on the rod, a springpressed locking-catch pivotally mounted on the support and engaging with the rod to lock the support at various positions on the rod, a cord attached to said catch and serving to move the same against its spring and to permit the vertical movement of the support, and a frame-carried on the support and having the curtain hung therefrom.
2. The combination of a vertically-extending rod, an L-shaped frame, one member of which is provided with an orifice slidably receiving the rod, and the other member of which is provided with an orifice bounded on one-side by a lug, a locking-catch pivotally mounted on said other member of the support and extending through the orifice therein and coacting with the rod tolock the support with the rod, the locking-catch being limited in its movement by the said lug, a spring pressing the locking-catch, a cord attached to the locking-catch, and a frame carried on the support and having the curtain hung therefrom.
