Be it known that I, GUsTAv H. BRUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, h'aveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in \Veed-Outting Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel weed-cutter designed to be attached to the shoe, the object being to provide a simple device to be operated by the movement of the foot for out" ting out weeds or the like.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a shoe-sole having my device attached along one side thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the knife attached across the toe. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the knife detached. Fig. 4 is a similar view of knife-securing plate. Fig. 5 is a detail section through the socket-plate.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the sole of the shoe, provided adjacent to the toe and nearer one side with a longitudinally-disposed plate 2, secured in any suitable manner to the sole and provided on its adjacent face with a transverse recess 3.

4 indicates what may be termed a socketplate, secured to the sole a sufficient distance from the toe and provided with an elongated slot 5 coincident with a recess 6 formed in the sole, or the socket-plate may be of sufficient thickness to be provided in its under face with a suitable recess somewhat larger than the slot.

7 indicates a substantially U-shaped knife provided with a curved cutting edge 8, aterininal shank 9, from which projects a lockinglug 10,having a transverse elongated head 11, and at its opposite end with a tongue 12, extending substantially parallel to the shank. In order to attach the knife to the shoe, it is simply necessary to bring the elongated head of the locking-lug in alinement with the slot in the socket-plate, and after inserting the head the knife is sprung to bring the elongated head into a position at right angles to the slot to prevent its release and to insert the tongue at the opposite end of the knife into the recess formed in the plate 2.

It will now be seen that the knife-edge will project from the side of the sole and the operator is enabled by a quick movement to cause the knife to sever the weeds in a manner which will be obvious. It may be desirable in some instances, however, to locate the knife across the toe of the shoe, and for this purpose I provide a transverse knife-retaining plate 13, provided with a loop 14 at one end, anda transverse elongated slot 15 at its opposite end, and secured to the shoe-sole in any suitable manneras, for instance, by screws 16. The knife is attached to this securingplate in the manner described in connection with the attaching portion referred to, the locking-lug being inserted in the slot 15 and the tongue into'the loop 14, as illustrated. It is obvious, however, that instead of the socketplate and the recessed plate 2 a secondknifesecuring plate similar to the plate 13 might be provided for the purpose of securing the knife along the edge of the sole.

By the employment of this simple and inexpensive construction I am enabled to produce a weed-cutting implement which may be located at any desired point upon the shoe and which may be readily attached and detached as desired; but while the present embodiment of the invention appears at this time to be preferable I do not desire to limit myself to the structural details set forth, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary them at will within the scope of myinvention.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a knife provided at one end with a locking-lug and at its opposite end with a tongue, of mechanism cooperating with the locking-lug and tongue and adapted to be secured to the shoe-sole, substantially as specified.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a substantially U- shaped knife having one arm provided with a locking-lug having an elongated head and provided with a tongue on the opposite arm, of a plate provided with an elongated slot designed to receive the locking-lug, and securing mechanism designed to cooperate with the tongue, substantially as specified.

3. The combination With a substantially U-shaped knife having one arm provided with a locking-lug having an elongated head and with a tongue on the opposite arm, of a socket-plate provided with an elongated slot designed to receive the locking-lug, and a recessed plate designed to receive the tongue, 10 substantially as described.
