Be it known that I, NATHAN D. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification;

This invention relates to detachable buttous for garments, the object being to provide an .improved button of this class in respect to simplicity and strength of construction and means for most effectively securing the same to a garment or other object; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the several parts of the button, all as hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

the border-bead, in which the border of said collet is engaged or clamped, whereby the said face and collet are locked one upon the other in the usual manner, leaving a clear space therebetween and as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thusV forming a hollow button` body. The collet 3 in this instance has four slots or openings 8 S and 9 9 formed through it, and has also an inwardly-projecting l0opcatch lO formed on its inner face, all for purposes below described.

suitably pointed, whereby they. are easily passed through a fabric, as indicated in Fig. 3, and each having preferably a shoulder o ,on the inner side thereof, formed by making an indentation 7 therein or in any other suitable way. AThe said slots or openings 8 Si and 9 9 in the collet 3 are formed for the purpose of letting the said hooks pass from said loop 6 outwardly and the free or pointed ends thereof to be moved inwardly and outwardly of said collet and to permit of moving said attaching element A bodily transversely across the button or of moving the latter on said element. The said loop-catch l0 is provided for engagement with the said cross-bar 4 of the loop 6 when the said attaching element A is brought to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the button is attached to an article on which it is to be worn. The central portion of said collet 3 is more or less elastic, and consequently when said cross-bar 4 is moved forcibly undersaid loop-catch l0 said central portion of the collet rises, letting said bar pass said catch,and subsequently the latter springs down behind said bar, thus holding said button-attaching element firmly locked on the button against detachment, as in Fig. 3, when strain is brought upon the button, the points :n of said attaching element being engaged in said border-bead of the face 2 and the opposite looped end thereof being firmly held under said face. Referring to Fig. 8,which illustrates the relative positions of the button parts when the button is attached to an article, it will be seen that the ends of said fabric-engaging hooks 5, extending through the slots9, have their extremities engaged in a circular recess on the inner side of the border-bead e of the button-face 2 and that said hook extremities spring outwardly against the inner side of said bead, whereby they are held in said attached positions. The operation of attaching the button requires that said hooks 5 5 be brought about to the positions shown in Figs. l and 2, and after their engagement with said fabric the button is slid along on the said loop 6, so that the points w .r may be sprung under the edge ofsaid bead z of the button-face but to so operate said points the latter must be sprung apart somewhatybut upon bringing said points into said bead they spring again toward yeach other, bringing the IOO shoulders o o and said indentations 7 against the inner borders of the part D of said collet, Fig. l, and said abutments or shoulders 0 o into such engagement with said last-named border as serves to retain said extremities against detachment by strain upon the button. By springing the points of said attaching-hooks out of engagement with said beaded borderof the button the latter may be slid on the loop G to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the button be detached from the garment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A detachable button consisting of a body comprising a face anda rear-side collet, having a clear space therebetween, said collet having two parallel transverse slots therethrough, near the center of said collet, and two other slots in line with the former terminating by one end within the border-bead of said face, and a loop-catch on its inner surface, combined with a transversely-movable, wire, button attaching element having a looped end contained within said body, having a part for engagement with said loopcatch, and button-attaching hooksextendin g having two parallel transverse slots therethrough, near the center of said collet, and two other slots in line with the former, terminating by one end Within the border-bead of said face, and a loop-catch on its inner surface, combined with atransversely-movable, wire', button attaching element having a looped end contained within said body, having a part for enga-gement with said loopcatch, and button-attaching hooks extending in curved lines from Ysaid looped end through two of said slots and near to said border-bead for engagement therewith within the ends of said last-named slots, and having shoulders thereon for engagement with a border of the last-named slots, substantially as set forth.
