Description

w. E. KEENE.
Measuring Funneli No. 59,034. Patented Oct-- 23 1866.
nrrnn STATESPATENT OFFICE;
WASHINGTON E. KEENE, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
' IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURlNG-FUNNELS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,034, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WAsn1NGroN E. Knnnn, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful lVIeasuring-Funnel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of .the construction and operation of able to put the liquid into the vessel the customer furnishes to retain it. This requires pot measures of various sizes and a funnel, in most cases six articles; or if he has a graduated-measure, the vessel being always larger at the bottom, the liquid is spread over so large a surface that it cannot be readily measured.
In graduated measures as heretofore constructed, also, the graduations have always been on the sides, rendering it necessary that the vessel should always be perpendicular to secure accurate measurement. My invention obviates these difficulties.
In the drawing, A is a funnel having its discharge-tube a, as usual, and b is a hollow cylinder placed in the axis of the same. Said cylinder is fastened in said axis by cross-piece l at the top and by standards g at the bottom,
' thus securing a flow of the liquid in the funnel through discharge-tube a.
The exterior of said cylinder is belted with rings or marks, indicating the fluid contents material, 0, operated by piston-rod d. The.
lower part of said piston is conical to fit the discharge-tubea closely, and the upper part fits the cylinder tightly, so that it can be drawn up from the discharge-tube, and will remain at any point in the cylinder where it is left.
The piston is attached to the piston-rod by two nuts, e and j, which allow it to be compressed as it wears. a suitable material for the piston.
The funnel has a cover, It, to prevent the access of air and dust when not in use. Legs 42 are attached to the lower part of the funnel, to allow it to stand upright when not inserted in a jug, bottle, carboy, or other vessel.
The piston being down, its lower end closes the discharge-tube. The funnel is then filled with the liquid to any desired graduation on the central cylinder, and is then transferred to the vessel to be filled. The piston is then drawn and the measured fluid flows into the vessel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
For a measuring-funnel, the arrangement-of the valve and valve-rod, consisting of elastic piston 0, attached to rod 02 by compressingnuts 6 and f within cylinder 1), constructed as described, with holes m and exterior graduating-belts, and combined with and arranged in the axis of funnel A by means of standards g and cross-piece Z, all operating together as and for the purpose described.
