SEPARATING-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 5865724, dated Ju1y 20, 1897.

Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY ED- MoNDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lV'ashington, District of vColumbia, have invented a new and useful Separating-Screen, of which the following is a specification.A
My invention relates-to that class of screens which are inserted in water-supply pipes, and is more particularly intended for use in connection with the pipes of automatic valveregulators. It is, however, adapted to be used in any Water-supply pipe where it is desirable to keep lint, scale, shell, or any foreign substance whatever from vpassing through the pipes.
My invention consists in the subject-matter hereinafter described and more specifically pointed out in the claim..
Referring to the drawings which form al part of this application, Figure 1`is a side elevation of the supply-pipe provided with iniiow and outflow valves and having my improved screen-chamber located therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through .the center of the screen-chamber, showing the screen in position therein. Y Fig. 3 is aperspective view of my improved' screen removed from the chamber.
In the drawings, A indicates a watei-sup ply pipe having located therein the iniicw and outflow valves B B. Suitably located between these valves is the screen-chamber C. This screen-chamber has a suitable slot or recess G cut therein, and in this slot or recess is placed a screen, which is hereinafter more fully described. N I
The screen proper consistsrof two apertured* framing-plates E E, united detachably byscrews e or in any other suitable manner. Ily firmly clamping the wire fabric between the two apertured plates I form an exceedingly solid structure and one adapted to be used in pipes in which very high pressure of lwater is maintained. In screens with which I am familiar the trouble heretofore has ,been that when any considerable amount of sediment of any description had collected upon Y or behind the screens the lpressure 0f the water would force them from their fasteniugs. As the parts of my screen are assembled before it is placed in the pipe it is possible to canse the apertured framing-plates 'to grip the wire fabric'with such force thatit cannot be pulledoutfrom between them, and when the framed screen is seated in thegroove in the pipe it will of course remain in place, no matter how great the pressure of the water may be. Again,l as the apertured plates are detachably unitedshouldthewire fabric become worn it is anexceedingly' simpley matter to replace it.
In the construction of my device when the parts of the screen have been assembled, as i hereinbefore indicated,the screen is slid into the recess G in the valve-chamber C, and then I the plug or bonnet D is'screwed lfirmly down into position on top of the screen. The plug or bonnet not only serves to close the opening through which the screen is introduced,
' but also serves to hold the screen in place and to prevent fluid from passing through the y pipe otherwise than through the screen.
It will' be noted lthat my improved screen is exceedingly simple in construction. It can be instantly removed from the screen-chamber by closing the vinlet-valve and unscrewing'the plug or bonnet D. Should the pipe become choked in any manner, therefore, the operation of cleaning it can be performed expeditiously and'yvith very little trouble.
