UNITED STATES PATENT ()rricn.
DANIEL GOODNOYV, OF BOSTOJ, MASSACHUSETTS.
BucRLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,638, dated October 20, 1896. Application filed July 1, 1895. Serial No 564,698. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DANIEL GOODNOW, of Boston, county of Snfiolk, State of Massachusetts, -have invented an Improvement in Buckles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. This invention has for its object to provide a novel buckle or strap-fastener.
My invention comprises two cooperating separable members, which inclose between them a stud or projection on which the strap, also passed between said members, is locked or held, said members acting to retain the strap upon the stud, Suitable means'are provided for lockingthe two separable members In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle embodying my invention, said view showing the buckle in position helding the two ends of a strap; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the buckle members separated, a portion of one strap end being broken away to expose the stud or projection Fig. 3, a cross-section of the buckle, taken through the stud; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, showing one embodiment of my invention, a b are the two principal members of mybu'ckle, the member a being shown as hinged at a to the member b. A stud 0, shown as carried by the member I), is embraced between the said members, and at its free end may enter a suitable recess a in the member a. The ends at d of the same or of difierent straps are first laid one upon the other in the memher 1), with the stud c projecting through registering holes (Z in each, and the member a turned down into position covering the said straps and preventing dislodgment of the same from the stud.
To look the two members together, I have herein provided the member awith a hooked lip a, adapted to be held down by a pin e, passed over it and through the eyes b on the member I), at either side thereof. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) This pin may have its end 0' bent back and formed into an eye, through which and a hole (1 in the lip a may be passed a padlock p (shown only in Fig. 3) or other 1 which the tongue faces.
suitable lock to prevent withdrawal 01 inc locking-pin.
My improved buckle need not be permanently attached to either end of or to either strap, and can therefore be retained for further use when the strap is cast aside.
In Fig. 4 the two principal members f f, instead of being hinged together, as in Figs. 1 to 3, are made to slide one upon the other, the member f being shown as having down and in turned flanges f to engage and slide upon the lips-f on the member f.
The two membersare locked together by a spring locking-tongue f on the member f, which springs into a hole f in the flange J, a suitable stop (not shown) preventing withdrawal of the member f in the direction in My invention is not limited to the particular' constructions or embodiments herein shown, forthe same obviously may be varied within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim- 1. A buckle comprising two separablemembers, constructed to be separated and closed for each manipulation of the buckle one of said members carryinga stud which normally of said members, a downturned flange on the other of said members, the downturned flange having its free enc'kbent upwardly but left stands between said members, an upturned 8o 'flange bent downwardly at its free end on one free and clear of said downturned portion,
and means for locking said flanges together, substantially as described.
2. A buckle or strap-fastener comprising separable members hinged one to the other at one side, and embracing a fastening-stud, 0
one of said members being provided with an upturned flange rolled over on itself -to form an eye, the other of said members having a downturnedflange or lip bent upwardly at its free end, said upwardly-projecting free aeaese tween the same, and a downturned flange or lip bent upwardly at its free end in an open U shape on the other member to enter between and register with said eyes,,the ,free end of said upturnedlip having a perforation, and apin arranged to slide in said U-shaped lip and engage said eyes, said pin being pro-" vided with a central eye to cooperate with and rest adjacent said perforation when in looking position, substantially as described.
4. A buckle or strap-fastener comprising separable members embracing between them a fasteningstud, and means to lock said members against separation, said means comprising eyes formed at one side in one member,
stantiallyas described;
a U-shaped lip formed on the other member to register with said eyes, having an upturned prolongation, perforated at its outer end, and a pin arranged to slide in said U-lip and engage said-eyes, said pin having a central eye on one side thereof to cooperate with said perforation in reeeivinga looking-bolt, sub- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing itnesses. i
