THOMAS CORSCADEN, OF NEV BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY VORKS', SAME PLACE.
BLIND-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,955, dated February 4, 1896. Application iiled October 24, 1895. Serial No. 566,677. (No model To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ConscADEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind or Shutter Hinges, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in blind or shutter hinges, and the main object of my improvement is to produce a simple, cheap, symmetrical, and efficient hinge that is convertible into a right or left hand hinge, as may be desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my hinge. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View with one leaf swung around into the position that it would have upon a Widely opened blind, the line :c denoting the edge of the casing to which the stationary leaf A is secured. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same looking toward the right-hand side of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the leaf that is designed to be secured to the casing and the other leaf in the position that it has when the blind stands at right angles to the face of the casing. Fig. G is a front elevation of my hinge as arranged for the opposite hand from that shown in Figs. 1 to 5,
A designates the stationary leaf, which is designed to be secured to the window frame or casing, and B designates the companion leaf for being secured upon the blind or shutter. 7, having screw-holes 8 for securing the leaf in place. It is also provided with a horizontal wing 19 of a symmetrical form, having two like perforations 9 for receiving the pintle 10 and locking-catch 16 of the leaf B, and also with the notches 12 to let pass the lug 13 of said leaf B.
The leaf B has a symmetrically formed leaf-body 1i, with screw-holes 15. At one side edge of said body there is a locking-wing with upwardly and downwardly projecting catches 1G. At the opposite side edge of said leaf-body there is the pintle-bearing wing having upwardly and downwardly projecting The leaf A is provided with a leaf-body pintles 10. The distance from center to cen- 5o ter of the locking and pintle-bearing wings is about equal to the distance from center to center of the two pintle-bearing perforations 9. The upper and lower corners of the leafbody at the side edge bearing` the pintle-wing are provided with the lugs 13 to prevent the hinge-leaves from being lifted off their pintle.
The leaf B may be hung at either side of the leaf A, as may be desired, in order to use the hinge as a right or left hand. When the 6o leaf-bodies stand at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 5, the lower one of the lugs 18 may pass through the notch 12 and the pintle be slipped endwise into place, as shown.
The leaf A will always be used in the position shown, and the leaf B is used with one edge uppermost when hung at the left-handside edge of the leaf A, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, and with the opposite edge uppermost when hung at the right-hand-side edge of the 7o leaf A, as shown in Fig. 6. In either case the lug 13 will engage the under side of the Wing 19 and prevent the pintle being fully withdrawn in case the blind is lifted except when said lug is in the same vertical plane as the notch 12 in said wing. The upper hinge on the blind or shutter may be any ordinary hinge or a duplicate of the hinge herein shown. When the pintle is in the left-hand pintle-bearing orifice and the blind is swung 8o fully open the catch 16 on the under side of the locking-wing strikes the horizontal wing 19, rides up the same, and drops into the right-hand pintle perforation to fasten the blind. Vhen the pintle is hung in the righthand perforation the locking-wing engages the left-hand perforation for fastening the blind open.
I claim as my invention- 1. A blind or shutter hinge consisting of a 9o leaf having a horizontal wing with two like pintle-bearing perforations one at each side of said leaf, and the companion leaf having a leaf-body and pintle-wingv with pintles at its opposite ends, one pintle being adapted to fit one of said bearings when said companion leaf is placed one end up, and the other pintle being adapted to iit the other one of said bearings when said companion leaf is upwardlyand downwardlyprojecting Catches turned the other end up substantially as defor engaging said perforations, substantially 1o scribed. as described and for the purpose specified. 2. The herein-described blind or shutter 5 hinge consisting of the leaf having a horizon- THOMAS CORSCADEN. f
