ELECTROGALVANIC BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,795, dated December 24, 1895. Application filed May 9, 1895. Serial No. 548,650. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL J. SPALDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrogalvanic Belts; and I v do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the casing or cover, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, reference being had to properly attaching and adjusting the different parts of the belt proper, said cover being folded so as to properly inclose the cells and their different attachments. The cover or sheath is provided with any desired number of electrodes, such as a, which electrodes may be located as shown, one of the electrodes ct being provided with the hook b, which hook is for the purpose of connecting the elastic connection B to one of the end cells by means of the links cand d, said links being located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 6.
When it is desired to provide a belt with four electrodes, as shown in Fig. 6, the center elastic connections O are provided, which are located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 6, vand the ends of\ said connections provided with the clamps d, which clamps are for the purpose of .engaging the links cl2, thereby properly connecting the two systems of cells,
and at the same time holding the cells in proper position within the case or covering.
To one of the electrodes c is connected the hook D, to which hook is attached the reversible link D', said reversible link being journaled or pivotally connected to the link D2 by means of suitable eyes a or their equivalents. For the purpose of providing a means for insulating the electrodes a, to which the reversible linkD' is attached, one end of said reversible link is provided with suitable insulating material, as illustrated in Figs. G and 7 The object and purpose of insulating one end of the reversible link D/ is to provide a means forl increasing and decreasing the battery power by cutting in or out the cells, as hereinafter described.
The battery-cells consist of the zinc plates CL2 and the copper plates a3, which plates are located with reference to each other substantially as shown in the drawings, and the felt d4, all of said parts being properly bound together by means of suitable cords c5.
For the purpose of providing an elastic connection for each side of the diiferent cellssaid cells are independently connected together by means of the Wires h', one branch of said wire b being connected to the zinc plates d2 and the other branch being connected to the copper plates c3, and the two wires b connected together between the cells by means of the coil b2, said coil being formed with the longitudinal opening b3, said opening beingvof sufcient size to receive and connect the wires lo', and at the same time receive the plug E, as illustrated in Fig. 7, said plug E being properly connected to the insulated wire F, said insulated wire being connected to the eye f, said eye being properly connected to the proper electrodes a.
When it is desired to reduce the strength of IOO the batteries proper, the plug E is removed from the reversible hook or lilik D' to include the desired number of cells, thereby cutting out the cells located between the plug E and the hook D, the strength of the belt proper being governed by the number of cells cut out.
`When it is desired to use the full force of the beltbatteries, the plug E is removed and the reversible link D turned so as to connect the uninsulated portion of said reversible link with the hook D.
For the purpose of providing a means for carrying the current to any desired part of the body-say to the wrist or arm-the electrode G is provided, which electrode is provided with a suitable attaching-clamp or bindingstrap, such as l-l, and the proper connection made by means of the wire g and the hook g'.
It will be understood that when the elec trode G is connected as illustrated in Fig. 7 said electrode becomes active, or, in other Words, is located at the end of the circuit.
For the purpose of providing cells that will reta-in the exciting-Huid for a considerable length of time, the plates a2 and a3 are convexoconeave both longitudinally and transversely, thereby providing plates that will bind or press the felt a* only at the ends and sides of the felt, thus leaving the central portion uncompressed, and yet at the same time allowing the felt to come into proper contact with the zine and copper plates.
For the purpose of providing a means for adjusting the suspensory I longitudinally upon the belt proper independent of the electrode, said suspensory is provided with the strap J, to which strap is attached the clasp K, which clasp can be moved to any desired point of the sheath and quickly connected thereto.
For the purpose of providing a means for vertically adjusting the suspensory, the strap .I is provided with a suitable buckle, such as k or its equivalent.
The obj ect and purpose of providing for lateral adjustment oi' the suspensory I is to bring suspensory in proper position independent of the position of the belt proper, thereby providing a means for adjusting the electrode a upon the body without any reference to the position of the suspensory, the current being conveyed to the suspensory by means oi' the wire 71; and its hook k2, said hook being properly connected to the eye f, as illustrated in Fig. l.
It will be understood that the suspensory I may be insulated, if desired, thereby preventing any injury by reason ot' a heavy current.
If desired the cells may be provided with the eyes h, which eyes are properly connected to one of the plates a2 or a3, as desired, said eyes being for the purpose of receiving the hook 7L', said hook being for the purpose of making connection to one of the electrodes a by means of the wire h2.
Heretofore it has been customary to form the felt a of dierent layers of material, so as to produce a felt of suiiicient thickness; but I prefer to use a thick felt known fawns hair, the felt being formed of a thickness to correspond with the thickness of the felt proper. By using felt of this material the exciting-fluid will be retained much longer, thereby producing better results, and at the same time producing a battery of greater power.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an electro-galvanie belt, the combination of a sheath, having connected thereto a series of cells by means of the elastic connection B, the reversible link D', one end thereof provided with insulating material and a number of electrodes secured to the sheath, and a hook as D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an electro-galvanic belt, the convexeconcave plates a2 and a3, the wires b connected to the convexe-concave plates, the coil b2 surrounding the wires b and the felt a4 formed of fawn hair, and of a single thick ness, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The combination of the cells consisting of the convexe-concave plates a2 and a, connected together, the felt (t4, located between the plates and clamped at the ends and sides of said' felt upon opposite sides thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of the cells with their hinges formed of the coils b2 and wires b', and the plug adapted for insertion into the coils of the hinges, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
5. In an electro-galvanic belt a sheath, provided with a series of cells, the suspensory I attached to the sheath, so as to be vertically and longitudinally adjustable independent of the electrodes, the Wire 7c provided with the hook 7a2, and the eye f, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
G. In an electro-galvanie belt a series of cells connected to a sheath by means of the elastic connection B and the reversible in su lated and noninsulated link D', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
