Description

(N0 Model.) W. B. MGGOLDRIGK.
LID LIFTER.
No. 533,731. Patented Feb. 5, 1895.
WITNESSES, (NVE/VTO/P, )1; W/L 41 m 5.41am talc/g UNITED STATES PATENT Erin.
WILLIAM B. MCGOLDRIOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LlD-LlFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,731, dated February 5, 1895.
Application liletl September 14, 1894:. Serial No. 522,994. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. MoGo'LD- RICK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to lid lifters.
The object is to produce a device, by which lids, covers, and like articles, will be readily engaged, and held, as in a clamp, and accidental falling or disengagement, after the lid has been lifted, rendered impossible; and further, to employ a construction, at once simple, inexpensive and durable.
ith these objects in view, the invention consists in a lid or cover lifter having the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and wherein like letters indicate corresponding parts in both views, in which Figure 1, is a view in perspective, of an embodiment of the invention, showing ashank, split at one end to form lugs, and provided with a handle at the opposite end, lid engaging levers, pivoted between the lugs, in a manner to lie one above the other, and having their outer ends enlarged, the shorter arm of the lower lever being curved upward and abutting against the short arm of the upper lever, whereby the outer ends of the long arms are brought together, as a clamp. Fig. 2, is a view, in elevation, of the lifter applied, parts thereof being broken away, to illustrate more clearly. the arrangement of the levers, and the manner in which they are pivoted between the lugs, to lie one above the other, also the curvature of the short arm of the lower lever and its action upon the upper lever.
In the drawings: A represents a shank, havinglugs a, formed by splitting one end thereof, the opposite end being provided with a handle a 13 and 0, represent levers, between the outer enlarged ends of which a lid, cover or other article, is designed to be held. The
lever B, pivoted between, near the outer ends of the lugs, and being the lower lever, is designed to engage an opening on the under side of the lid, cover, or other article, and is provided with a short, curved arm Z2, for engagement with the under side of the inner short arm of the upper lever. This upper lever O, is also pivoted between the lugs of the shank, its pivotal center being in the rear of that of the lower lever, whereby the inner ends of the levers are retained in engagement.
In use, when it is desired to remove a lid or cover, by lifting it, the outer end of the lower lever is inserted in an opening or socket, or is placed on the under side of the article, and as the weight is brought to bear upon the lower lever, a clamping action will be exerted by the outer end of the upper lever, engaging the opposite side of the article, by reason of the upward pressure of the curved arm against the inner end of the upper lever. To release the article held between the jaws, it is only necessary to relieve the lower lever of the weight, as will be obvious.
Among the many advantages of this invention, may be mentioned the following: The extreme simplicity of construction and absence of small or frail parts, by which the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum, the device rendered durable, and its efiectiveness in operation insured; further, the novel arrangement of clamping levers, by which the pressure exerted by the jaws, as a clamp upon the article, is proportionate to the weight of the article; and further, the adjustment of the levers, whereby they automatically adapt themselves to the size of the article held.
Having fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lid lifter comprising a shank, having its end split to form lugs, and two levers, pivoted one above the other, between the lugs, the lower lever being curved, whereby the adjoining ends of the levers lie normally in contact, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
WM. B. MOGOLDRIGK.
