- the present invention relates to flow controllers for administration sets for the purpose of delivering fluids into the human body. Infusing fluids into the human body is done for a variety of medical reasons and there have been many administration sets which have been developed for this purpose.
- the present invention seeks to improve administration sets used for the purpose of infusing fluids into the human body by providing a flow controller which is adapted to be used as an attachment to the administration set or alternatively to be integral with an administration set.
- the present invention therefore comprises: a fluid flow controller for insertion in a selected position in a fluid flow line of an administration set. More particularly,. the invention resides in a flow controller adapted for detachable or fixed attachment to an administration set, said flow controller essentially comprising; a housing having a chamber inside which a flow restrictor fits and which is adapted to enable attachment to the administration set or to be integral therewith, wherein when fluid flows through said administration set to a patient via said flow controller said flow restrictor thereby restricts the flow of fluid to the extent that the fluid discharged into the body of said patient takes place at a constant rate irrespective of blood viscosity or fluid or body temperature.
- the present invention seeks to provide a convenient form of providing a controlled flow in an administration set and like infusion apparatuses and to overcome the problem of fluid impedence which changes significantly with change of temperature especially over the conventional range of temperatures in which administration sets of the type to which the present invention is ideally adapted is used.
- fluid flow rate changes of up to 8% can be caused by this difference alone.
- the present invention comprises: an in line fluid flow controller for use with a fluid administration set for infusion of fluid into the body of a patient, the administration set comprising essentially a reservoir of fluid connected to a supply line having a fluid discharge orifice; characterised in that the fluid flow controller comprises; a housing having a chamber therein, an inlet to and outlet from said chamber, said housing being adapted to receive therewithin at least one restrictor having an orifice or orifices configured to control the rate of fluid flow therethrough and into the body of a patient such that the fluid is infused into a patient at a predetermined constant flow rate or at a flow rate within predetermined limits via said discharge orifice.

- FIG. 4 shows an assembled view of the flow controller with the components 16 and 17 of the housing 11 brought into apposition. In doing this they secure the restrictor or orifice plate 12 such that a barrier is presented substantially normally to the axis of the fluid flow line which is in turn axially aligned to ends 13 and 14 of the housing 11.
- the orifice is adapted with a geometrically designed hole 18 which can be seen in FIG. 4 and this has been made the subject of applicants' co-pending U.S. application no. 480,290, filed Apr. 16, 1990, which has been abandoned in favor of co-pending continuation-in-part application no. 875,765, filed Apr. 29, 1992.
- the housing 11 receives fluid via inlet 13 axially along the passage 19 and into the chamber 15.
- the geometry of the hole 18 enables the fluid to be delivered at a constant flow along passage 20 and via outlet 14 into the body of a patient.
- the housing 11 can either be detachably affixed to the fluid supply line or moulded integral with the fluid supply line such that the inlet 13 is to be regarded as of indefinite length; so to the outlet 14. It should be noted that the shape and configuration of the housing as illustrated in FIGS. 2 to 4 shows merely one embodiment of many different embodiments of a detachable or fixedly attached fluid flow controller for use with an administration set in a fluid supply line.
- FIG. 5 there is shown a further embodiment of a flow controller 21.

- the housing 42 has therein a chamber 44, having located therein a hydrophilic filter 45, a hydrophobic filter 46 and an orifice plate 47.
- the hydrophobic filter comprises a hydrophobic mesh material which allows air to escape to the atmosphere but prevents the fluid from exiting.
- the orifice plate stays relatively still and the sealing spigot moves away from the plate when the controller is squeezed. This occurs with the assistance of webs.
- the critical features of the present invention reside in the existence of a housing having an inlet and an outlet with a chamber therein being adapted to accommodate at least one restrictor for the purpose of delivering via the outlet a constant flow rate of infusing fluid.

- fluid passes through the orifices in the array of restrictor plates 54, 55, 56, 57 and 58 upon selection of a flow rate by rotatable member 65.
- FIG. 9 shows a side elevational view of the rotatable member 65.
- This member is adapted to rotate in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction according to a selected fluid flow requirement.
- the rotatable member 65 is adapted with a passage 66 and grooves 67 and 68.
- the rotatable member 65 is rotated according to one selection such that the passage 66, as shown in FIG. 10 presents to passage 49 where a single flow is required.
- the passage 66 is presented to one of passages 50, 51, 52 or 53.
- passage 66 When any one of these passages are selected, fluid then flows through passage 66, and depending upon the presentation of the grooves 67 and 68 relative to the passages 49 to 53, fluid will flow in addition to flow through passage 66 through grooves 67 and 68.
- fluid will flow in addition to flow through passage 66 through grooves 67 and 68.
- FIG. 11 shows a similar configuration of an exploded multiple flow controller this time however a single orifice plate 69 is used with a series of apertures of the same or different diameters. These apertures 70, 71, 72 and 73 are presented to passages 74, 75, 76, 77 and 78. Wedge 79 is used to locate the plate in position and also to provide upstream passages for fluid to present to the apertures according to selection requirements.
- rotatable member 80 operates by rotation in either an anti clockwise or clockwise direction to select fluid flow. As with the controller of FIG.
- a single flow or multiple flows can be chosen according to the manner in which the passage (not shown) in rotatable member 80 which corresponds to the passage 66 of rotatable member 65 presents to either one of passages 74, 75, 76, 77 and 78.
- FIG. 12 shows an alternative embodiment of a restrictor plate 81 having radially disposed holes 82, which are located on that plate according to flow requirements.
- the restrictor plate 81 is superimposed over the rotatable drainage facilitator 83 shown in FIG. 13 such that when a flow selection is made, one or more of the holes 82 present to drainage passage array 84 in the rotatable member 83.
- FIG. 14 shows an elevational view of the external design of a multi-flow controller showing an external flow selector handle 85 with selection gradations 86.
- FIG. 15 shows an alternative embodiment of the flow controller 87 having a rotatable flow selector 88.
- the flow controller 87 has an inlet 89 and an outlet (not shown) which engages with a supply line in a typical administration set.
- the hole sizes of the restrictor plates may fall within the range of 5 microns to 100 microns.
- the hole sizes of the restrictor plates fall within the range 50 microns to 100 microns.
- the present invention can be utilised with gravity feed, administration sets or administration Sets which deliver fluid under pressure by for example elastomeric pressure pumps.
- the flow controllers can be inserted virtually anywhere in the length of the supply tubes associated with the administration set. It is optional whether a filter is used and where in the administration set the filter would be located. Preferably the filter is located in the flow controller however, it is quite feasible to locate the filter above the flow controller. Where fluid under pressure is utilised in an administration set, ideally the pressure would operate at approximately 10 psi but could be anywhere from 1 psi to 20 psi. As indicated, the use of filters is optional however, when a filter is used in a pressurised system, the reducing effect that the filter has on the pressure must be considered in pressure selection.
- flow restriction had previously been achieved according to one embodiment by use of a small bore glass tube. It is considered that the present invention can be used as a substitute for and improvement on this method.
- the flow controller of the present invention in all of its embodiments is useful in any application where a restriction of flow is required in an infusion system, either operated by gravity or under pressure generated by elastomeric or other conventional means.
