G. F. PORTER. TOE CLIP FOR BICYCLE PEDALS.
No. 529,951. Patented Nov. 27, 1894.
, citizen of the United .of the invention,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. PORTER, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOE-CLIP FOR BlCYCLE-PEDALS.
SPEGIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,951, dated November 2'7, 1894. Application filed May 7, 1894. Serial No. 510,367- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES RPORTER, a States, and a resident of Brockton,in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Olips for Bicycle-Pedals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in too clips for the pedals of bicycles, tricycles, velocipedes, and other similar vehicles, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the clip, whereby the slipping of the foot off the pedal is prevented and by which the clip may be adjusted to suit different widths of pedals.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a pedal showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of a clip detached.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates an ordinary bicycle treadle or pedal, comprising the sleeve, 2, which is journaled on the crank, the end pieces or plates, 3, secured to said sleeve having oppositely extending horizontal arms, 4, and vertical arms, 5. Secured to the arms, 4, are shafts, 6, upon which are journaled the corrugated or fluted rubber foot pieces, 7. The parts so far described may be of the ordinary or usual construction as they form no part of the present invention.
The numeral 8 designates two flat metal strips or plates, having their outer ends bent rearwardly at right angles, forming arms, 9, provided with angular holes, 10, for the passage of the angular ends of the front shafts or rods, 6, upon which the front rubber foot piece, 7, is journaled. These plates are secured in place by nuts, 13. The inner ends of these plates which extend part way across the pedal overlap each other and are formed with elongated registering slots, 14, through which passes a headed screw bolt, 15. Connected with this bolt is the toe clip, 16, consisting of a metal plate having a downwardly extending arm, 17, with an aperture through which bolt, 15, passes, and its upper portion bent forwardly and then rearwardly, forming arms, 18 and 19, between which the toe of the foot fits. A nut, 20, on the bolt, 15,-holds the clip in place and also clamps the inner ends of the plates, 8, together and secures them in the position to which they are adjusted.
The operation will be readily understood. The nut, 20, is loosened and the plates, 8, extended or contracted, as the case may be, and the arms, 9, thereof connected with the ends of the shafts or rods, 6, and secured in place by means of the nuts, 13. The nut, 20, is then tightened clamping the inner ends of the plates together and securing the toe clip in place. It will thus be seen that the plates, 8, can be adjusted laterally to accommodate them to varying Widths of pedals.
The plates, 8, and the clip,l6, may be covered with leather or other material, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isp 1. In a pedal or treadle of the character described, the combination with the end pieces, of the inwardly extending plates, the inner ends of which overlap each other and are formed with registering elongated slots, and their outer ends bent at a right angle and connected with the pedal; the curved toe clip, formed with an aperture, the screw bolt passing through said aperture and slots and the clamping nut, substantially as described.
2. In a pedal or treadle of the character de scribed, the combination with the end pieces, the shafts or rods connected therewith having angular ends and the rubber foot pieces, of the plates having their outer ends bent at a right angle and formed with angular apertures engaging with the ends of said shafts, and the opposite ends bent inwardly and overlapping each other and formed with elongated slots, the curved toe clip having a hole or aperture in one end, the bolt passing through and through the slots in. said plates and the clamping nut, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing. as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. PORTER.
