IM PROVEM ENT ON H EEL-CALKS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,2111, dated November 28, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS SYMoNDs,oI` Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maille, have invented a new and Improved Heel-Call; for Ladies Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows a perspective otl my inven tion attached to the heel; Fig. 2, an end view ot' the same reversed; Fig. 3, a perspective of lthe detachable plate.

My invention consists in a plate having a slot and bent so as to form a right angle, with one part thereof foi-med into two arms or prongs, with the ends pointed and turned up to serve as holders when the user is walking, and in the use ot' a button to secure thedevice to the forward part of the heel. The plate is heut in order to tit over the heel when secured for using, as seen in Fig. l,and so as to t into the space immediately in front ofthe heel when reversed, as shown in Fig. 2. In either ease it is secured by the huttonf. They plate A is not secured immediately to the. forward end of the heel,but rests on another permanently affixed thereto, and through which the screw S passes.

The plate A is applied to the heel by turning the buttonfso that it will pass through the slot c, and then by turning it in a position at right angles to the slot it will hold the plate rigidly in position.

The plate A is so constructed that when the button is turned toholditin position it presses with considerable force on either side of its pivot S, and cannot be easily turned.

When to he used the plate is placed on the heel with the arms or prongs b b resting on the bottom of the heel, as shown in Fig. 1. Vhen not needed the plate is reversed, with the prongs lying on the sole of the instep ot' the hoot or shoe, and the points inserted into holes made to receive them, and the corner between the sole of the boot and the heel receiving the corner of the bent plate, as shown in Fig. 2.

Vhen any change inthe position of theplate is desired, it must be taken from otf the heel to he turned, but can he worn on the heel when either in use or not.

The plate A is intended to be made of sheetsteel.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the plate A, having the slot c, the prongs b b, and turned-up points d d, with-the buttonf, as and for the purposes described.
