REIN ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BUELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dufi, in the county of Rock and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Rein Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in harness and especially in the manner of applying the driving reins to three horses placed abreast with each other, and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more The object of this invention is to so arrange the driving reins in connection with three horses or animals, as to economize material employed and to lessen the number of reins, and at the same time effectually attain the desired result.

In the drawings:-Figure l is a plan view or diagram showing the manner of applying the reins in the improved manner. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the front portion of the arrangement of parts, as shown in Fig. 1.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1, 2 and 3 represent harness saddles or back bands supplied with terret rings, or any other necessary devices will be provided in connection with said parts, as may be found desirable and well known in the art. Three bits 5, 6 and 7 are employed and provided with rings 8, and to the outer ring of each of the bits 5 and 6 is attached a snap hook 9 carried by the front ends of the main reins 10, which pass through the outermost terrets 4, of the harness saddles or back bands 1 and 2, and from thence extend backward to the vehicle or at a suitable distance in rear of the said harness saddles or back bands for engagement by the driver. The rear ends of supplemental reins 11 are adjustably connected to the main reins 10, as at 12, back of the said harness saddles or back bands, and extend forwardly through the inner terrets 4, of the harness saddles 'or back bands 1 and 2, and have snap hooks 13 on their front ends, adapted to engage the two rings 8, of the central bit 7. plemental reins 11 by means of clasps or other suitable connecting devices 16. The said straps 16 are crossed under the neck of the central animal. The middle harness saddle or back band 3 does not have the terrets 4 engaged, as such engagement would not be necessary owing to the fact that the central animal would be guided by the supplemental reins 11, which are secured to the main reins 10, and there being no reins to pass through the said harness saddle or back band 3 by engagement with the terrets thereof, the latter harness saddle or back band would be used solely for supporting the remaining parts of the harness on the central or middle animal. When tension is exerted on the left hand main rein 10 to turn the animal to the left, the same is transmitted through the left hand supplemental rein 11, of the bit 7, and through the right hand strap 15, to the left hand ring 8 of the bit 6. When tension is applied to the right hand main rein 10, the reverse parts connected thereto are operated, as will readily be seen.

The essential advantage of this device provides in bringing the animals abreast with each other and thereby causing the same to pull with equal power upon the traces, as will be readily apparentand also to centralize the draft and cause an equal distribution of the same.

The device has many advantages, as will appear from time to time by the use of the same, and as will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- In a device of the character set forth, the combination of the main reins having supplemental reins attached thereto, a pair of outer bits to the outer ends of which said main reins are connected, an inner bit to the opposite sides of which the free ends of said supplemental reins are secured, and crossed straps attached at their rear ends to the said supplemental reins and at their outer ends to the inner ends of said outer bits, substantially as described.
