IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,908, dated September 1'2, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, EDMUND MoEEIs, of the city and county of Burlington, in the State of New Jersey,have invented anew and Improved Mode of Constructing Fruit-Boxes, of which the following is afull and exact description, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Taking a thin board, A,of the proper length to form the shell ofthe box, several saW-kerl's are made across it at B B B, Where the corners are to come. These kerfs are made deep enough to enable me to bend the board round into a shell Without breaking the wood at the corners. The ends are joined by a dovetailjoint, or by a plain lock-joint, punched out as shown in the drawing. On opposite surfaces of the inside of the shell, at O O O O, four or more holes are bored, reaching about twothirds through the wood, and so arranged that they will come directly opposite to each other when theshell is folded up into shape.

The bottom of the box l) is struck out with a punch, having two or more projecting spurs left at each end. These spurs are so placed as to t into the holes, above-described, as the prepared shell is folded up into a box, and, being bored with a bit havingnofenter, they do not show on the outside. Single Wire is then driven through the edge ot' the box, down through the dovetail -joint in a hole drilled to receive it, thus keeping the boX together with no other than the wire fastening, and dispensing with the cost and labor of nailing. A complete box is shown at E,`the Wire fastening being represented by the dotted lines traversing thejoint.

I do not claim the device of making circular corners by the use of saw-kerfs, nor the dovet-ilj'olnl.

I claiml. In a fruit box constructed as described, the dovetail and wire rod, or equivalent.

2. The bottom, provided with its pins for insertion, in combination with the sides,jointed and constructed as described.
