HAT-PIN GUARD FOR LADIES HATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,602, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed March 30, 1892. Serial No. 427,076- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLENA S. SHEPARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing enabling the pin or pins by which the hat issecured upon the head to be always passed through the same hole or holes in the crown. It is a familiar fact that the constant puncturing of ladies hats by the long pins employed for securing them upon the head, a new hole being made with each insertion of a pin, soon causes material injury to the hat besides greatly impairing its appearance, such disfigurement of the hat frequently extending over a considerable portion of the body thereof.
It is the object of my invention to provide a device which can be quickly and conveniently applied to a hat, and which, when so applied, will enable the pin to be always and readily passed through the same hole or holes, and thereby preserve to the remaining portion of the hat-body its original imperforate condition.
To this end my invention consists in the hatpin guard constructed and operating as hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters designate like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a face view of a hat pin guard embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views of a slightly modified form of the guard.
The hat pin guard devised by me consists essentially of a disk-like head or body a having its outer face made concave and provided with a centrally located perforation a of but slightly greater diameter than that of an ordinary hat pin, and having projecting from its inner side a plurality of pointed prongs 12 adapted to be thrust through the hat-body and to have their inner ends bent laterally against the inner side of said body, whereby the guard is detachably secured to the hat. The head or body a is of such di- 55 ameter with respect to the diameter of the perforation a that a concave guiding surface equal to several times the latter diameter is afforded between the periphery of the head and said perforation, the function of which guiding surface is to infallibly direct the point of the hat pin into the perforation whenever it is placed against any portion of the outer face of the head, and thereby greatly facilitate the operation of inserting the pin through the guard when the hat is on the head. The guard will be located at that point on the hat-body at which it is desired to locate the pin, and as many of the guards will be secured upon the hat as there are pins used. The pin is thrust through the perforation a, in the guard, being infallibly guided thereto by the concavity of the face of the latter, and through the hat-body, and being always inserted at the same place makes but a single hole in the latter instead of a new hole for each insertion as heretofore. The prongs b can be made round in cross-section as shown or of flattened form as may be desired, and they can be made integral with the head a or secured thereto in any suitable manner.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the concavity of the head a is increased to such an extent as to cause said head to assume a cup shape, whereby it is adapted to partially embrace the head of pin 0 as shown and to present an ornamental and pleasing appearance. The guard will. preferably be made from gold or silver, or made to resemble those metals, thereby serving to ornament the hat, but it can be made from celluloid, bone or other material if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hat-pin guard for ladies hats herein described, consisting of a head or body having its outer face made concave and provided with a centrally disposed opening of greatly reduced diameter, whereby an extended guiding surface between said opening and the periphery of the head is afforded, said head or body being provided at its rear side with a plurality of pointed prongs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
OHARLENA S. SHEPARDSON.
