Be it known that I, JOHN G. HODGsON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-lVIetal-Stamping Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to presses for stamping sheet metal, and more particularly to those used for drawingmetal blanks or sheets into shapes.
In sheet-metal-stamping presses heretofore generally in use the follower plate or ring which yields before the movable die has generally been mounted upon powerful yielding springs, such springs being generally composed of large blocks of rubber. rlhese springs are expensive and not very durable, and where the machine is used for drawing somewhat deep shapes, and where it is necessary that the follower or movable die have considerable yielding motion, or where the press is of a compound or double-acting character, the compression of the supportingspring is so extended and great as to produce a very detrimental rebounding action, very much interfering with the smooth and proper running of the press even where it is mounted upon very expensive and solid foundations; but the most serious difficulty in presses of this old construction when made compound or double-acting and used for deep drawing is owing to the fact that as the supporting-spring is more and more compressed it exerts a greater and greaterpressure upon the follower toward the end of its stroke, which interferes with the proper operation of the drawing-die and increases the power required to run the press.
My invention consists in providing the press with a reciprocating support for the follower or yielding die, which is positively withdrawn as the plunger or movable die advances. This reciprocating or movable support for the follower is furnished with a yielding cushion or spring the same as the stationary follower-support has been furnished with, excepting that the spring or cushion may be made very much smaller or thinner, as the chief motion of the follower is provided for by the withdrawing movement of the support itself. By combining with the press a movable or reciprocating followersupport the cushion or spring on the follower will or need be compressed during the final or any portion of the press-stroke only to the extent desired or necessary to cause the follower to offer the necessary resistance to the plunger or movable die.
My invention also consists in the novel devices and novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, I have shown my invention as applied to the compound drawing-die patented to Edwin Norton in Letters Patent of the United States No. 460,594., dated October 6, 1891. It will be understood, however, by those skilled in the art that my improvement may be applied to any form. of stamping or drawing die heretofore in use and to any suitable form of-press for operating such dies.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure l represents a central vertical section of a drawing-press embodying my invention or to which it is applied. Fig. 2 isaback elevation. The section Fig. l is taken on line l l of Fig. 2, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Figs. 4L and 5 are detail views of parts hereinafter to be described.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the press, B the female cutting-die secured rigidly to the frame or bed-plate, and C the female die, of annular shape, having at its outer periphery a cutting-edge c and at its inner periphery a female drawing edge or face c. D is an annular drawing-die having an outer or male drawing-face d and an inner or female drawing-face d and offset d?. E is the punch or male drawing-die, and F is the follower or presser ring, which operates in conjunction with the die C and recedes before it. These parts constitute the compound drawing-die, in connection with which I have for convenience chosen to show my improvement. Any other kind or construction of die may, however, be employed.

G represents the movable or reciprocating follower-support, the same being mounted beloW or in line with the follower F.
F' is the spring or cushion, preferably of rubber, interposed between the reciprocating follower-support G and the follower F. The follower-support G may be connected with the follower F by any suitable means, but preferably by the supporting-pins f and f' and the interposed ring'f2. The supportingpinsf' rest upon the top plate F2 of the spring. The bottom plate F3 of the spring is connected with the follower-support G by adjustingscrews g, by means of which the tension of the spring maybe regulated. rlhe withdrawing or reciprocating movement may be communicated to the movable follower-support Gby any suitable mechanism which will cause the same to properly coact with the press stroke or the movement of the-movable die operated thereby. The means or mechanism which I prefer to employ for communicating this motion to the reciprocating follower G, and which I have therefore shown in the drawings, consists of a cam H, the same being preferably formed in a rocking arm H', pivoted at h to the frame of the machine and operated bya connecting-link H2 from the reciprocating cross-head D', to which the movable die C is connected. The movable follower-support G is furnished with a projection or friction-roller g', which engages the cam H. I
The cross-head D' is operated from the su pplemental crank-shafts K by means of the crank or cranks K' and connecting-links K2. These connecting-links K2 are preferably furnished with coupling-plates Zo k', having an interposed rubber or yielding packing 7a2 between them. This cushion 102 serves to give a much easier and smoother movement to the press and adds greatly to its durability and perfection of operation and compensates for variationsin the thickness of the metal sheets or blanks operated upon.
The male die or plunger E is operated from the main crank-shaft P by means of a crank P' and connecting-link P2. The supplemental crank-shafts K are connected together by connecting-link Ktl and are operated from the main crank-shaft P by means of the crankarms K3 P2 and slotted connecting-link P4.
I claiml. In a press, the combination, with a movable die and follower, of a movable followersupport and a spring or cushion interposed between the follower and its movable su pport, substantially as specified.
2. In a press, the combination, with a movable die C, an opposing die, and yielding follower F, of a movable support G for said follower and means for operating said movable support in conjunction with said movable die, substantially as specified.
3. In a press, the combination, with a movable die and follower, of a movable followersupport and a spring or cushion interposed between the follower and its movable support and mechanism connecting said movable support with the die or its cross-head for operating said support in conjunction with said die, substantially as specified.
4. In a press, the combination, with a movable die and follower, of a movable followersupport and a spring or cushion interposed between the follower and its movable support,
and mechanism connecting said movable support with the die or its cross-head -for operating said support in conjunction with said die, said mechanism consisting in a cam H, rocking arm H', and connecting-link H2, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with acompound drawing-die B C D E and its follower F, of movable follower-support G, spring or cushion F', supporting-pins connecting the cap-plate of said spring with said follower F, cranks and connecting-links for operating said die C and plunger E, cam H, and connecting-link H2 for operating said cam, substantially as specified.
6. The combination,withacompounddrawing-die B C D E and its follower F, of movable follower-support G, spring or cushion F', supporting-pins connecting the cap-plate of said spring with said follower F, cranks and connecting-links for operating said die C and plunger E, cam H, and connecting-link H2 for operating said cam, the connectinglinks K2, through which motion is communicated to said die C, being furnished with yielding cushions k2, substantially as specified.
7. The combination, with a compound drawing-die comprising cutting-die B, movable annular cutting and drawing die C, annular drawing-die D, and movable punch or male die E, of a cross-head D', carrying said movable die O, and the operating-crank K' and connecting-links K2, furnished with yielding cushions k2, substantially as specified.
8. In a press, the combination, with a movable die C, of an opposing die, a cross-head D', carrying said movable die C, and an operating-crank and connecting-link furnished with a yielding cushion to compensate for differences in the thickness of the stock, substantially as specified.
9. In a press, the combination, with a movable die and follower, of a movable followersupport and a spring or cushion interposed between the follower and its movable support, and mechanism connecting said movable support with the die or its cross-head for operating said support in conjunction with said die, and an adjustable connection or screw between said follower-support and the bottom plate of said spring or cushion, substantially as specified.
