(No Model) v F. TANNRATH.- COMBINED GOAL SGUTTLE AND ASH SIFTBR.
Patented Nov. '15, 1892;
THE NORRIS PETERS 60.. Pncwuuruu, WASHINGTON, n, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRITZ TANNRATH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED COAL-SCUTTLE AND ASH-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,360, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed January 12, 1892- Serial No. 417,353. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ TANNRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, 111 the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Coal-Scuttle and Ash-Sifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined coalhod and ash-sitter, the object being to combine in an inexpensive and durable manner a coal-hod and ash-sifting device in one a1- ticle.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention with parts broken away to show the manner, is made of perforated or open-work material-such as wire-screening-and the top of the hod adjacent such end is provided with a cover 3 of the same material. The said end of the hod made of such open-work material is also provided with a removable plate 4, preferably of sheet metal, whereby said end can be closed and the device used as a coalhod. The said plate could obviously be removably secured to the end of the hod in various ways; but as a simple and convenient construction the sides of said end of the hod are provided with upright guideways 5, within which the flanged edges 6 of the plate 4 fit. The said plate is made to fit closely within said guideways 5 and the lower edge of said plate is made to fit closely along the bottom of the coal-hod. It is also preferable to arrange said plate so that it cannot be drawn out easily, whereby the curved portion 7 on the upper end of said plate can be used as a handle when using the device as a coal-hod. It will thus be seen that when the plate is in place the device can be used as an ordinary coal-hod and that the coal dust or particles will be prevented from falling out by reason of the close fitting of such plate. When, however, the device is to be used as an ash-sitter, the plate 4 is removed and may for convenience be placed in the other end of the hod. The ashes can then be placed therein,and by means of the handle 1 and a handle 8 on the closed end of the hod the ashes and small particles can be shaken through the sieve portion of the hod, while the larger or partiallyconsumed fuel will be retained in an obvious manner.
The plate 4 is provided at its upper end with another curved handle 9 on the opposite side from the flanges 6. thereby providing a handle by which the said plate can be used as a shovel.
I claim as my invention- 1. A combined coal-hod and ash-Sifter consisting of a coal-hod having one end 2 composed of open-work materialto form a sieve, a cover 3, of open-work material, over such end of the hod, and a removable plate for closing said end of the hod.
2. A combined coal-hod and ash-sitter consisting of a coal-hod having one end composed of open-work material to form a sieve, a cover of open-work material. over such end of the hod, and a removable plate for closing such end of the hod, provided with an outwardlyprojecting handle 7.
3. A combined coal-hod and ash-sifter consisting of a coal-hod having one end composed of open-work material to form a sieve,a cover of open-work material over such end of the hod, guideways upon the sides of the hod at said end, and a removable plate adapted to slide in said guideways for closing said end of the hod.
4. A combined coal-hod and ash-Sifter consisting of a coal-hod having one end composed of open-work material to form a sieve,a cover of such open-work material over such end of the hod, guideways upon the sides of the hod at said end, and a removable plate for closing said end of the hod, provided with flanges adapted to slide in said guideways, and hanlocated over said end 53 of the hod,so that by dles 7 and 9 on opposite sides of the end of said removing such plate 4 the coal-hod can be plate. used as an ash-Sifter.
5. A coal-bod or similar receptacle having In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 5 one end composed of open-work material, to presence of two Witnesses.
